ps : just a note, I know it's a bit off topic, sorry Burn. Have you noticed this strange coincidence ?
3 Rings for the Elven Kings under the Sky
7 for the Dwarf Lords in their halls of Stone
9 for Mortal Men doomed to die
1 for the Dark Lord on his dark throne

1973 : the year Tolkien died.

Woah, never noticed that! Speak about Numerology...

Hey, I have listened to the part a few times now and my vote goes to the correct quote being "...are the key strings of the lord of the rings"

Besides that, the (guitar-)part after Anneke finishes her part never fails to give me the shivers. Brrrr. Love it!

Grtz.

According to a website I've looked at tonight, the words are as follows:

"There is no such thing as a natural death. Nothing that happens to Man is ever natural, since his presence calls the whole world into question. All men must die, but for every man his death is an accident. And even if he knows it and consents to it, an unjustifiable violation." Well, you may agree with the words or not, but those are the keyspring of The Lord of the Rings.

That's the impression I had to this day...

To be honest, all the time I listen to it I NEVER hear laws of the living... I'm quite sure it's LOTR, you know...

The only problem is that 'keyspring' doesn't really mean anything... why use that phrase?

I'd rather say key strings or something like that, but still, no idea what THAT could mean :-?

Couldn't "key strings" or whatever he says, means the main idea that lies beneath the whole book ?

Maybe all the LOTR could be resumed by what Tolkien says, when he quotes Simone de Beauvoir.
This sentence stresses the main difference between men and elves (mortal men, and immortal elves).
Men (and Frodo by the way) know they gonna die, they accept it, but they don't understand it, and then fear it. Elves envy mortal men on some way, because nobody knows when they are going when they die, whereas Elves have to wait till the end of the world.
You can feel this state of mind in all the lines of TLOTR, and more specifically in the Silmarillion.

That might be it you know... But it's also about everyone of us in some wicked way... definitely, Sand and Mercury is a sad song.

I was just talking about possible Tolkien's point of view :P ...but i agree, it could be all about us in a sad way...

My guess is that "keyspring" is a made-up word to express the main/fundamental "springing off" point -- the thought that gave JRR the idea for the story. There's a long history of making up compound words in many languages, English included.

Sounds good.

But as I am one who hears "key strings" I thought that that would mean something like : a major subject or theme.

Like a key-figure is a someone very important in certain events.

A quote that hopefully clarifies it a bit

Key:
"4. A position or condition which affords entrance, control, pr possession, etc.; as, the key of a line of defense; the key of a country; the key of a political situation. Hence, that which serves to unlock, open, discover, or solve something unknown or difficult; as, the key to a riddle; the key to a problem."

So the key-string mentioned would be Simone de Beauvoir's quote and it would be like KingOfCroco already mentioned, "the main idea that lies beneath the whole book".

Maybe the best would be to find online the quotation of de Beauvoir in her native language... ;) Then we would be able to make a new translation of it :D

Yeah Sand and Mercury is without a doubt an incredible song, and maybe one of the most brilliant songs ever written. I don't know if they can ever really top that song, although they do come close with songs such as Travel in being epic

It's plainly "Key string", not spring. He's refering to the thread of ideas that flows throughout the book. Not a terribly common phrase, but not unique by any means.

It's about 10 years since the last post, but I came across the BBC interview on Youtube so anyone can hear for themselves:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ca5TUYB ... r_embedded

By minute 9 he starts to tell about the qoute from the French writer Simone de Beauvoir.

And in my opinion he says: You may agree with those words or not, but those are the key spring of LOTR
I think they are 2 words: key spring.
