i don't know if you people noticed, but on 'debris' (from the black light district ep) anneke uses her voice a little different. it's like she's singing through her nose. she does the same thing on 'golden grounds' in the "one more day-ay..."-part, and also a little on the arpeggio outro of 'even the spirts are afraid' with that "skin"-phrase.
i think this sounds absolutely marvellous. it gives her already quite unique voice another boost of originality. for some reason she sounds so lovely cynical when she uses that voice, something like a female thom yorke (radiohead).
well... i just wanted to ask: have you noticed this too and what do you think of it?

Nelly is cool

yeah, I've noticed Anneke's experimentation on that song. But, to be honest she experiments within each album. So, it's really nothing that should not be expected. Expect the unexpected with Anneke and the Gathering.

IF you take a look of the videos on Black Light District, you'll see that Anneke uses some device to record his voice directly from her throat (I'm not sure if I wrote ir correctly)... a kind of microphones around her neck.

I'm pretty sure that she uses that sound on Golden Grounds, just before that lyric (Going along with the melody of the guitar). Yeah, that's pretty cool to find out every detail on each song, and most of all, the fact that she can handle her voice in many diferent ways :flower:

And yes, I noticed that on Debris, Smash ;)

I asked Frank once about that and he told me that is army's radio equipment used in WWII but I don't remember in which songs you can hear the result of this throat stuff

I had asked the same question in 2002 for a Sand & Mercury itw. Anneke had replied it was a tank mic used during the WWII.
I can remember they tired that for Debris but they didnt keep it in the end.
and during the vidoe of BLD EP, I think it's Monsters yo ucan hear in the background ;)

Yep, it was in Monsters  after "fits in a teardrop" (silence, just music), just before "Give what's worth remember, give what's worth dying..."

You can get the same exact effect in the studio by taking an SM57 microphone and turning up the recording levels and at the same time 'squelching' the signal with tons of compression. I know, I've done it before...Or you can sing into the pickup of an electric guitar(which looks really funny)with a cord running from the guitar directly into the mixing console...Don't know if I'd want a box tied around my neck while I was singing. Sounds uncomfortable. But they used it I'll bet for nostalgic reasons. Musicians are weird like that...

It's not that uncomfortable. When you get used to those microphones, they're practically unnoticeable around your neck.

Yeah, I read that in the Sand&Mercury interview too.

I love it how Anneke can experiment so widely with her voice and what she does always sounds good! :D

And Nelly Furtado is brilliant, her latest album Folklore is very good! :flower:
