Does anyone know what artist Anneke is singing about in "Travel"? I don't know if maybe she discussed it in an interview at one time or whatever. I'm just curious. The song almost makes me cry everytime I hear it. So amazing...

i don't know what artist Anneke is singing about in this song... A good question to ask her !
When I listen "Travel" I always hear words about The Gathering even if there are not many violins in Tg's music... It's a beautiful song between a fan an an artist and i think we can "superimpose" Anneke's feeling for this artist in ours for TG. Well the name of this song is "travel"... so why not let us travel our feelings about this song...

ps: excuse me for my english...

I have always thought the song is about a classical music composer - Mozart, Bach or maybe Beethoven. True, the song does mention loudspeakers, but for me that means just another example of "music that was to stay forever". I have always felt that the song is about classic music that survives all ages and all criticism and possibly even without the composer ever getting appreciation in his own age. This to work, it would have to be a composer with at least fourteen masterpieces (symphonies?).

But that's just what I've thought. Maybe someone knows better?

I would go for LvB on this one. That was my first thought when I first heard Travel. Some years later, I happened to see a video of The Gathering performing in Salonica, Greece in 2003. Seeing Anneke punching herself on the chest and just being in her own world (what an ecstatic performance indeed!) while singing this particular song, I would surely and positively state that Travel has been written for The Gathering themselves.

Anneke always says in the interviews that she would like to live in Mozart's times, so it's more likely about him.

I absolutely agree that when I listen to this song, I too superimpose Anneke and the rest of TG as the inspiration for the song. Their music is so amazing, and I wonder too, if they only knew...

Interesting topic... I always thought that it was about the band themselves, concerning the relationship between them and the fans (The Gathering is a band that with each album earns and loses fans because of their continuous development and progress), but reading more carefully the lyrics can create lots of doubts, indeed. I'm not sure.

Of course we can listen to the song and think about TG themselves, but I honestly wouldn't believe that Anneke would sing of herself "I wish you knew / your music was to stay forever" She really wouldn't.

I'll go with the classical music explanation, as I said earlier. Beethoven or Mozart, else someone has safer info.

so "Travel" is in a sense The Gathering's version of "Rock Me Amadeus"

Mozart. She always says that she loves him, so if it's about a classical composer then it's definitely Mozart.

Ok, to all of you who was nice enough to help us out on Trenchie boys request here last week or whenever; here's another clue for you all (the walrus is Paul). Sorry, that was Beatles, but here goes for TG:

"Leaning over your fourtiest masterpiece"

Now go do your musical homework, people!

It can easily be Mozart. He indeed did compose a Symphony #40 and it is one of his more popular ones. So I guess everyones assumption was correct.
