It seems to be on sale on iTunes. It wasn't there a few days ago. Now, however, the release date is shown as being May 22, 2001. The cover art, though, is definitely the new one and, of course, there are 27 songs.

I'm hesitating: I don't mind buying from iTunes (I have bought stuff there many times before), but does anyone know whether the packaging and the overall presentation is worth waiting for the elusive physical version? If there is a mere 4-page booklet, then, I'll go for the iTunes version.

Thanks!

I love it!! The booklet is really nice, some rare old pics and some stuff written by Bart about the time he joined the band and the way it all ended. There's also a interview taken from an old newspaper that took place before TG played theire very first gig, its nice to read.
The AAD songs are far more interesting then the ones that are on the official album with Niels. The lack of vocals in most of the songs (bart hardley sings) make them wonderfull to listen at. Heartbeat A is instrumental and On a Wave I just love beceause Bart doesnt sing much in this one and you now can really hear what a wonderfull composition this actually is. Passage TD he sings a bit more and even througs in some grunts. Of P and F is instrumental and I dont really get why there are lyrics written in the booklet.
There's a lovely live version from Stonegarden where finally we can hear Marieke put on a live performance.

I love it! :D

From Vic Records myspace:

Concerning the titlel ’ Downfall’...Hammerheart vs Vic Recs.......

Hammerheart records has released an album with the same title in 2001 which is completely sold out for years.
This album contained the rehearsal demo 1990, demo1990 and the never released e.p, as bonus disk the cd had the Live at Willem I video recordings. In total 13 tracks, which were not mastered or restored...

After 'Always' The Gathering recorded a 6 track promo demo, vocalist Bart sings normal / clean on it for the frist time and the bands history as they wanted to explore the path beyong the average death metal grunting.....So they wanted to change the vocals style more and more form grunting into clean vocals.

However, before the recodings of their second album, Bart left the band.

Eventually, 5 from these 6 tracks from the 1992 promo, ended up on their second album 'Almost a Dance', only differently arranged, another vocalist and complete new lyrics.
So that 1992 promo is a real rare piece of The Gathering's history. Especially with Bart on vocals and with his original lyrics. This promo was never released and only 7 copies were made, 6 for the band members and 1 for the owner of vic records...... So now its finally available on Vic Records' 'Downfall'.

The Celtic Frost cover 'Dethroned Emperor' was recorded during the recordings of the rehearsal demo 1990. The Gathering did not want to give the impression they were Frost clones or anything as they were inspired by many other styles and bands. So they decided to drop the cover and did not release it on their rehearsal demo 1990.

So all in all, the Downfall album contains 7 never before released tracks, not on cassette in the early days, nor on the Hammerheart album. Besides that, this Downfal contains 7 never released live tracks, recorded during the bands early phase, 1990 - 1993. All with original and founding member Bart Smits on vocals.

One of the other big differences with the Hammerheart edition, is the fact this brand new Downfall is completely restored and mastered. Mike Wead (King Diamond / Mercyful Fate). In long and intense sessions he managed to get the best possible sound quality of of these ancient recordings. Digitalized it first form the original tapes, restored these files and finally mastered them.

The new booklet contains some rather long liner notes from original vocalist Bart about all in site details from the period 1990 - 1993.

So after all these years, it's finally out :)
I don't have to ask "any release date yet?" at the begining of every single month anymore, haha :P

Now I just have to go and buy the damn thing, and then I can finally stop bitching once and for all :)

so here they are:

on amazon.uk
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Downfall-Early- ... 387&sr=8-2

on amazon.de
http://www.amazon.de/Downfall-Gathering ... 435&sr=8-3

on amazon.fr
http://www.amazon.fr/s/ref=nb_ss_w?__mk ... &x=18&y=10

It's still available on amazon.com too but its is more expensive, even without shipping (for us, european folks)

you can also get a copy from alternative stores, which are sometimes located in the United States and cheaper than the main Amazon store. I already got some used Cds following this way and never had any problem. The "Downfall" are mentionned as "used or new" Cds but considering the exclusivity of this release, the copies are 95% in new condition and sometimes much cheaper than the real amazon itself.
