Twee stukjes uit een (Nederlands) interview ;

Hoe ben je bij The Gathering terechtgekomen? ;

Heb je voor The Gathering in andere bands gezongen? ;
In Bad Breath dus, die na mijn vertrek is opgeheven. En in Seventh Episode, een melodische speedmetalband, die nu nog steeds bestaan.

Seventh Episode bestaat nu wellicht niet meer, het interview is best oud.

English translation ;

Two parts from a (Dutch) interview ;

How did u end up with The Gathering ? ;
Before, i sang in a Jazz/Blues duo called Bad Breath. A friend of mine, who knew people from The Gathering, knew they needed a new singer. Thanks to him i was introduced to the band and i could do an audition.

Did u sing in other bands before The Gathering ? ;
In Bad Breath thus, wich was disbanded after i left. And in Seventh Episode, a melodic speedmetalband, wich still exists

Seventh Episode may not exist anymore since the inteview is very old.

A melodic speed metal band featuring Anneke on vocals? Damn... that sounds appealing. Not as much as The Gathering, but still...

Wow...I knew about Bad Breath, but I never knew about Seventh Episode. I've never even heard of them. Very interesting...I wonder if there are demo or rehearsal recordings floating around with Anneke on vocals with them.

I had no luck neither with bad breath nor 7th episode,their demos(if any) are hard to find. :(
Marjolein's previous band,on the other hand,is very-very easy to find and listen,they are strange but i kinda like them.. :D

I don't understand too much your post, but anyway, I like anneke accompanied of metal, I think her voice stands out much more... TG was a metal band in the beginning... I'm not saying speed metal.... but anneke sounds amazing in mandylion and with songs from always like 'the mirror waters' and the very very known 'stonegarden'.

@Coyote: you don't like her voice in the late albums?

haha... of course I like... it's most wonderful voice that I've heard ever... but I feel that with the present style anneke doesn't give everything with her voice... it's still amazing... but nothing compares with some excellent moments of anneke. e.g. in sand & mercury, on most surfaces or travel.

definitively I think that metal sound emphasizes the anneke's voice much more. (very personal opinion :wink: )

I like both style :) it's nice to not feel anymore she's pushing on her voice... I dunno a song like Jelena where she just whisper some parts... It's blowing me away!!

But as I said, the metal era was only to praise her voice really. Just watch the video included on Superheat, when there's a part "oh I am tired of the gulping that you do" and so on, her voice really sounds like squeezed out, but there's no strain on her face and oh my God, she's great :D

Anyway, I can't say that nowadays music of TG is more emotional, cause it always was, but it's definitely more intimate, especially with Anneke's voice (good example, Burn ;) )

But ok, it's only my opinion :D

Cheers,

Tomek

When HTMAP & then ITE came out, one of the things that initially worried me about them was that Anneke's singing wasn't as powerful as that of Mandylion & NB. Her vocals on those first 2 albums were so powerful that they completely blew me away. By contrast, the later 2 albums had much quieter vocals, & I was rather worried that she was no longer able to really belt it out. From what I've read, though, she can still get her voice to soar when the music calls for it, so I'm definitely glad about that.

Well she can still do it when necessary however, she's more a mezzo-sporano than a soprano now...
(for those who don't get a f*ck about it, it just means she can't reach the highest tunes she used to anymore)

That's kind of true, you know... she seems to have some problems on e.g. Bizarre while singing Leaves...
