I disagree that bootlegs hurt a band.

First, someone watching a bootleg knows that bootlegs have crappy sound and images. This has been a fact as long as bootlegs have existed (like what, 40 years?) and it never impacted an artist image.

Second, bootlegs are usually sought only by big fans of a group. Casual listeners will rarely if never get a bootleg. Fans of the band will not get a bootleg instead of the real DVD. They will get both.

Third, if a casual listener gets to hear a bootleg and likes it, chances are they will want to get to know the artist more and buy some real albums and live recordings.

I'd have a different opinion if it was an illegal copy of the professionally shot DVD, but this is really just a fringe item. I see it as extra publicity in the digital age.

i may be wrong ... i feel like reading a typical old fan theory.

to me, fans feel free to think and get what they want.

they dont obey to definite rules, except respecting their artists.

Well, I never listen to bootleg, they sound crappy :) I bought one about 17 years ago... A Sonic Youth bootleg of the Daydream Nation tour. I might even still have it somewhere in my vinyl boxes.. I never managed to listen to it completely, and I never bothered with bootlegs anymore after :)

that's your opinion and your experience... i totally disagree... but i wont waste my time trying to convince you about this. that's not the aim of this topic.

i'm not against video bootlegs and video boots collections. even more if they are approved by artists. there are good official pro shots ones i have.
the only point is ... i dont collect them. that's it.

at last, my thought is: the bigger collection you can have, the smallest fan you can be too.

i can't find any reason to buy a bootleg :-|

as long as money is not involved it is fine with me but buying this kind of stuff is silly (in my way of view)

it is not sellers' fault. They sell it because they have found victims that are willing to buy them. :flower:

but some artists are not performing all around the world all the time
and concerts can be rare
bootlegs are good for collection
and if there is a bootleg of a very very cool concert and nobody seems to have it,
i would consider buying it from the seller just to see it

My way of view exactly. Bootlegs should not be sold, only passed around.
