The mistake of drinking an iced mocha tonight seems to have put my brain on overdrive, and turned my thoughts to Gathering news of years gone by...
Namely the "lost songs" topic... :)

Alot of long-requested material showed up on the Accessories collection, and then later on, some more demo material with the Mandylion anniversary disc...

But I still wonder if there's more, in some shape or form...?
Re-reading some archived news (I wish I could find more) reminded me of titles that were anounced, but never saw the light of day...

Well, I'll do the best I can here, recalling them off the top of my head -

- something called "The Masters"?

- 2 titles from HTMAP, "Next End Cottage" and "Let's Float Forever"...

- a song called "if_then_else", from the album of the same name...

- 3 other cover songs during the "Life's What You Make It" sessions... I think I remember hearing that 4 were actually recorded, but they were only satisfied with releasing the 1 song...

- a few during Souvenirs that appeared on the studio documentary video shorts in early 2001... I don't know if the original version of "In-Between" called "Zion" was ever fully recorded as a demo, though in the video it sounds as if it was awfully close... and also "Mokaka" and a few other titles...

- I recall a topic about how "The May Song" and "Nighttime Birds" were also recorded during the Sleepy Buildings shows?

- And to step backwards a little, I even remember hearing that the song "How To Measure A Planet?" was originally considered for the NTB album... maybe there is an early version of this somewhere, as well?

I'd bet that somewhere, deep in this forum's archives, this has all possibly been discussed before...
but, I think it's worth talking about again, as I sure wouldn't mind seeing things like this turn up on another "Accessories" type of compilation :)
One can only wish...

Well I think some of the titles you mentioned wre only working titles and ended up on albums with other titles...
But yeah, on the small rockus available we can hear some bits and pieces which sound great and that I havent heard after...

I still hope that CM will release a 10th anniversary of How To Measure... But since it was released in november 1998... there is not much time anymore (and of course this re-release should include some extras ;))
About the song itself, I've seen a video of the Nighttime Birds tour during which the band plays htmap? but I dont know if it was written even before the recoridng of Nighttime...

Even though I would like to hear some of the songs you mentioned, i'm not sure they were all recorded... I would have to dig the archives.. At least I know NB and May Song were recorded during the Sleepy Bulidings gigs. If NB hadnt so much newto offer in this version, I found the May Song very interesting (but that's also cause it was the first time I could listen to it live)... But since it was not played good enough according to the band, it was not released...

i agree . nice topic.

here is a quote from Eleanor's faces #6, where Hans mentionned 9 songs of the upcoming HTMaP? album:
"Red is a Slow Colour - Propably built in the fifties - My Electricity -Let's float forever - Great Ocean Road - Next End Cottage - Marooned - Illuminating - How to measure a Planet?"

Maybe "Let's Float forever" is "Travel"? That would suit to me...lol

Lets float forever sounds like working title of liberty bell, I think.

About one of these days, Hans once said that the did record a studio version of it, but it will never see the light of day... I think it was recorded just for fun.

Also some time ago, Bart Smits mentioned about some really old TG material he owns on tape, and he said he was going to transfer it to digital format...

Damn, we have to try to find old material since, I think, listening to some new TG tunes will take some more time..

Very interesting thread, it'd be very nice if we could get our hands on "new" rare songs *greedy face* :D .

Heard it?

Where can I hear this song? Is it on a live bootleg?

Great topic indeed... as a matter of fact i have been listening a lot to "La Lutine" which is the working version of "Home" got it for some old bootleg, if anybody's interested pm me and ill send it right your way. About the other title songs, i think Mokaka was in fact a working title for a song (cant remember which one tho).

Cheers

well sharing is not something the band can go against simply cause they prefer to focus on creating new tunes than earning money a la Lars Ulrich way...
As far as I see it, I'm only against sharing material that could not be copyrighted yet... so in case of souvenirs demo/promo, I'm not too bothered ;)

Awesome -
very interesting to hear these early mixes... makes one speculate on how these songs might have originally been released.

What a treat, thanks so much Joro! :D
