The more i listen to the lp, the more their current music reminds me of Faith & the Muse, The Crest debut album, Mortal Love, Xandria debut album, Beseech, Theatre Of Tragedy's Aegis, Delight debut albums, Pale Forest, Flowing Tears… some music i enjoyed more in the past. As a result, I would say The Gathering is not original and not the same anymore ... but in the other hand , it's impossible for me not to like the new songs.

On the previous albums you could also listen some similarities with other bands.
It's just influences

That's true ;)
On We Just Stopped Breathing I had even asked Hans if Garm had participated in that song, so the drums sounded like Ulver's :) (that's just an example)

yeah ... sure.

it's like Broken Glass is very Portishead

or Travel which sounds like Twin Peak soundtrack to me. ehehehehehe my own opinion.

but the old general chemistry was something very different from what they play today, i mean something more simplistic and direct. something we can reproach for after HTMAP?, BLD and Souvenirs masterpieces we used for...

The West Pole is a wonderful album but certainly not a masterpiece to me because of my old influences too.. and these typical female voices bands I mentionned are more than obvious this time. (the structure, the melodies almost everything, except the sound and production)

not so many (not to say any) bands (don't) sound like Ulver or Cocteau Twins..
and so many bands sounds like goth ToT, Faith & the Muse blabla ....

there is a slight difference between "influences" and "clones"
