:D iTunes doesn't have a "The Gathering" genre, so "Unclassifiable" is probably closest to the mark.

generalizing

if i dont know the gathering, and somebody shows me no one spoke or a constant run, well yeah, a rock band. but if they show me miniature or no bird call, there's no way im stating that.

It's rock. And yes, it's generalization. Genres aren't supposed to represent one band each.

i disagree genre is suppost to stand for structure, content, or style of any given artist or band. im certain that bands can move through out genres. to say is rock is just narrow. although i must admit that in some given context, this statement seems to be quite helpful.

to say it's rock is already wide enough.. rock for me is a band with drums bass and guitars (can be with keys or not)... so Tg fist in that category :p

Well, lots of metal bands will slow it down and play a simple acoustic song but that doesn't necessarily mean they deserve to be classified as an entirely different genre. Genres are just a way to classify something so it can be identified easier but nothing is perfect. Every once in a while you'll get a band like this where the music cannot be easily classified.

I sometimes wonder about how all this started, and I keep thinking that it must have something to do with record shops trying to work out where to put their LPs in about 1960. Of course, it backfires, and most of the TG albums have been sitting in the "metal" sections of UK record shops for a long time - well after Mandylion. The French "hard rock" is better, but even that can be misleading.

In the Borders shops in the UK, and some smaller shops I've known, there's been very little categorisation - which tends to make matters worse - so I suppose that genre labels do serve a useful purpose.

But it all breaks down when a band makes a journey, and I can't think of a better example than Ulver.

Beyond that, there's a point beyond which it simply isn't worth trying to categorise. If you like what you're hearing, that's surely enough.

Wow that's a long time this phrase "hard rock" isnt used in France record shops... they use metal aswell now... which defofo doesnt suit TG's music for a decade...

I encountered the "hard rock" category in a record store just outside Marseille in about 2002-3 - can't remember exactly.

I think 7.5 is a pretty sensible grade.

Currently four stars out of a possible five on the UK Amazon site, in response to ratings in comments - so that's 80% = 8/10 so far.

I read today the review of D-Side (quite a good French gothic/dark culture magazine) and it was quite a good one! Pointing out the good points and the waekness you can feel about the album.
