I don't understand why so many people don't like "Treasure"...

what's more important is not what people like but what you do like... then everything's fine.

Let's see

1.-When trust becomes sound 6/10
2.-Treasure 7/10
3.-All you are 5/10
4.-The west pole 5/10
5.-No bird call 5,5/10
6.-Capital of nowhere 6,5/10
7.-You promised a symphony 4/10
8.-Pale traces 7/10
9.-No one spoke 5,5/10
10.-A constant run 8,5/10

Overall 60/100

And i was a bit "good" in most of the songs cause it was the Gathering,if it was another band there's good chance i would rate lower...
The overall 6/10 is exactly the general rating i gave it as a whole.
A rating of 6/10 for a TG album is so very bad.. Pity.. So after this i don't know if i can expect better anytime in the future.

Nor do I. 'Treasure' must be one of their best songs.

hannnnn...

But i agree with you Petros. The marks are really too high to me for what the music is.
Personally, i don't blame for anything but I consider my current playlists much better (= more unique, joyful, reflected, melodic, complex, attractive, sensitive, emotional, nostalgic, personal, deeper, passionated, stronger, weaker... blablabla) than what my favourite band can achieve today, at least in this album.

I was waiting for this release for almost two years. TG have never disappointed me, The west pole is what exactly I need this period, sweet music , jaunty songs with lots of up tempo riffs without sounding lame, corny. A straightforward album (in approach) BUT still unique! What makes The Gathering different from all the other bands is still there, I can listen to it, I can feel it.
With West pole they have proved that Annie's contribution wasn't as essential as many of us believed. TG is a whole genre of music.

I can't in this record.

Probably that's true, but it's not proved in this record.

Right

200% wrong. a lack of creativity and madness. Musicality was stronger and deeper in the previous releases. also, with the Westpole, The sound is unique but not the music itself (thanks to technology)

I'm music lover, if I don't feel it, i just can't love it.

100% agree with you. Time will tell

no offend Sophie, this is only music. Peace/
and remember , most of my other friends dislike my music and that's not a problem for me.

I will onlyhsay I agree with Sophie in the fact that I still have this feeling attached to everything what TG did...
But I understand it can be felt as not original enough or some of the reproaches... at Least in the case of hoang, I know you dont reject the album just becaus eit would be too "mainstream" or "poppy"

My assessment, divided a bit differently:

Great:
1. When Trust Becomes A Sound
2. Treasure
6. Capital Of Nowhere
10. A Constant Run

Good:
3. All You Are
5. No Bird Call
7. You Promised Me A Symphony
9. No One Spoke

Average: (aka "meh.")
4. The West Pole

Bad: (aka "blurgh!")
8. Pale Traces

Apparently I'm the minority that doesn't like Pale Traces... the way this song wallows in its mawkish sentimentality sickens me. When I first listened to this song (half wondering how long this cliché-ridden disaster was going to go on) I nearly broke out in laughter when the strings where introduced. Seriously, 10/10, people?!

We have very similar takes on the album... very, very similar! Just look at my ratings..

And you are dead on about Pale Traces... I just can't listen to it, it's the first track in the Gathering history that I absolutely can't stand... I skip it every single time. all the 10/10's are really surprising to me.

Pale Traces > virtually everything on the new Stream of Passion album (mind you, that probably has even more of the mawkish sentimentality that you dislike).
In the context of the Gathering album it's very good, not the best track but better than some, for me somewhere between an 8 and a 9 out of 10.

Today:

When Trust Becomes Sound: 6/10
It's grown on me a little since watching live videos. Nothing memorable but it works.

Treasure: 8.5/10
A track that has grown on me quite a bit since my last album rating. I love the jazzy tone in the bass.

All You Are: 6.5/10
Another track that has somewhat grown on me. I particularly like how it ends.

The West Pole: 8.5/10
I like that "vintage" vibe that the guitar melody in the beginning gives off. The chorus is one of my favorite moments on the entire album. The instrumental break in the middle is nice, too. Only real downfall in this track is Silje's vocals in some areas; they don't fit very well.

No Bird Call: 8/10
Brings "Always..." and "Souvenirs" to mind. Classy. :)

Capital of Nowhere: 8.5/10
The vocals have grown on me a little.

You Promised Me a Symphony: 8/10
Reminds me of a classical tune..

Pale Traces: 8/10
Marcela's vocals are awesome on here. My only gripe is it does feel a little too overdone.

No One Spoke: 7/10
Nice change of pace here. I don't like some of the guitar work, though. It feels cheesy at times.

A Constant Run: 5/10
I might be in the minority here, but I don't like this very much. Too happy for its own good and the ending is way too drawn out. It made me want to bang my head against my desk, truth be told.

Overall: 74/100

When trust becomes sound: I loved this one instantly. Overwhelming song full of energy. A shame that this is the only real rock song on the album. Great live opener. On album after a while it becomes repetitive and a little bit boring.

Treasure: Great song, stands time. Belongs to the best songs of the album, don’t know why..

All You Are: The intro is very annoying. The song rocks, and it has some good instrumental parts, but some Silje parts sounds very old fashioned. Sometimes I really love this song, sometimes I hate it. Depends on my mood. The songs grows over time, and is great in the car and it is a good live song they really should keep in the setlist.

The West Pole: Beautiful lyrics, beautiful voice, beautiful music. A new TG classic. One of the best of the album

No Bird Call:
Grows over time. It’s a beautiful atmospheric song. When I heard it in Heerlen, it was very impressive, even though I do not like ballads in general.

Capital of Nowhere ; first half: boring repetitive lyrics and music, I do not like Anne’s voice. Second half: is definitely the TG I love, complexity, reminds of HTMAP, I hope they will play it live soon.

You promised me a symphony:
my first impression: skip this song, dislike this song, stupid lyrics. This is not TG, this should have been left out of the album... The song itself is not that bad, I just do not like ballads in general.

Pale Traces:
great warm voice, good melody lines, atmospheric, and the instrumental end is great. Must be played live instead of No One Spoke

No One Spoke: Too happy, too poppy, but Silje sings perfectly... I think this is the weakest song of their current live playlist. It is just not interesting enough, but when I found out that the lyrics were about relationship problems, the song made far more sense !

A Constant Run: Too happy, too poppy, but less poppy than No One Spoke, great sing a long song... interesting lyrics.

I consider this album much better than Souvenirs (too technical, not rock enough) and Home (too poppy). The West Pole is more rock-oriented, I love that. But I hope the next album will be more experimental, such as HTMAP, and I hope Silje will put more emotion in her voice, like she tries live with the older songs such as Saturnine or Leaves

Ouch... to me this song live is beautiful! Yeah it's poppy but just for the end when the guitar riff goes one beat further than it did before and that the drums also make the accent with some crashes... it gives me goose bumps and live in proved to do the same (at least to me)
At first I also though this was not a great song... but actually I love it! it rocks!!
