The Gathering sterk in sfeer en opbouw

Belangstelling: ongeveer 400 personen

LEEUWARDEN – Lef kun je The Gathering niet ontzeggen. Met het hitje “Strange Machines” en de bijbehorende cd ‘Mandylion’ stond de band uit Oss halverwege jaren negentig mee aan de wieg van de gothic metal, een genre dat vervolgens populairder werd dan menigeen lief was. Maar ze lieten zich de kop niet gek maken en zangeres Anneke van Giersbergen ging niet in zo’n lange fluwelen sprookjesjurk het podium op.

De groep dreef af naar een veel interessantere richting, die op de cd ‘Souvenirs’ een voorlopig hoogtepunt bereikte: een prachtige mix van melancholie en moderne psychedelica, gelaagd vormgegeven waarbij de electronica de metalwortels niet in de weg staat. Hits van het kaliber ‘Strange Machines’ levert die aanpak niet meer op, maar op een ‘underground’-niveau zijn ze er tot in Midden- en Zuid-Amerika behoorlijk succesvol mee.

Dat ligt overduidelijk ook aan de live prestaties. De gelaagde aanpak in de studio laat zich uitstekend naar het podium vertalen, al gaan er her en der wat subtiele details op sampleniveau verloren. Maar in het opbouwen van sfeer kent de band zijn gelijke amper.

Gitarist René Rutten bijvoorbeeld benut zulke exotische hulpmiddelen als de theremin en de e-bow voor een omfloerst geluid, waaruit hij af en toe losbreekt voor een vette rockriff. De toetseninstrumenten van Frank Boeijen zorgen voor een beetje symfonische inslag, zonder dat de bombast er vanaf druipt.

Maar de grootste kracht van de band ligt in de persoon van Anneke van Giersbergen. Ze houdt galm en vibrato precies in de juiste proporties en zweeft zo boven de grooves, riffs en sferen van de rest, op weg naar een schitterend dromenland.

Visueel is ze evenzeer het middelpunt. Zelden zie je een zangeres zo innemend stralen en schitteren, ook nu ze duidelijk zichtbaar enkele maanden zwanger is.

Jammer dus, dat ze die prachtige stembanden niet uitleende aan voorprogramma Lawn. De plaatversie van hun ‘Fix’ knapte immers aanzienlijk op van haar stem. In plaats daarvan speelde de Fries-Groninger band er nu een langdurige uitgesponnen versie van, die er evengoed mocht wezen.
