Once more, The Gathering is out of the ordinary with its “home” new album. The dutch musicians don’t stop innovating. Each Lp has its own style and that’s the way we can see the band evolving to a growing maturity.

It’s quite difficult to describe the album with all these different atmospheres. The recording was mastered in an old church. Nevertheless, Home is very dark in spite of its lively and clear tracks. So The Gathering brings a new sounding which is a mixing of electronic, rock, gothic... about the guitars returning, as the band announced it, they are used with some more thoughtful and original strategy, in symbiosis with the atmosphere. The Gathering really carries us in their intimate and personal circle.

The songs are very complex, we just found there several sounding which build all the “Home “ atmosphere. Our favourite song is “Alone”, that we could already listened in A Sound Relief DVD, with a different version. This song is quite trippy. Whereas “Waking hour” makes us dream , the chaos reign in “Solace” , with the presence of five speaking languages.the very quiet “Forgotten”, sung on piano and voices (or a capella? ) let us have a break. To get into the album is pretty aerial, with weird flown guitars, on “Shortest Day” song.

In most of the songs, we notice that special rythm that carries us away. Anneke’s singing is simple, sweet and tactful.
and the melodies are pleasant. She managed to bring some emotionnal tunes. This album is a kind of mixing between How To Measure a Planet atmospheres and Souvenirs electronics. Home is a success which won’t disappoint The Gathering fans.

ps: thank you Damlair!!

"HTMAP ? is the fifth The Gathering album. Made up 2 Cd, this album, released in 1998, is one of the best band album. Always innovating some new sounding, rythms and atmospheres, The Gathering gives us 14 peculiar elegant tracks

Influenced by Pink Floyd, René Rutten (on the guitars!!!! ... mistake man) creates some new aerial sounding with his instrument. The atmosphere, which reigns in this album really makes you fly and drives us to another planet . both heavy guitar and serenity are predominating in the LP. Actually, after Nighttime Birds and If Then Else, were expecting for a heavier style. However, it doesnt matter if this album wasnt so welcome in the Netherlands when it came out cause it allowed the band to launch a music carreer in the over Atlantic. Well, the register changes : it’s a mixed of “dark/trip/hop/atmospheric/ experimental/pop”. In a way, some aerial metal music surrounded by new electronics sounds with a pop lightness.

About the songs, there are some nice and dizzy ballads such as “My Electricity”, “Marooned”, “Rescue Me”. particularly, the weird track called “The Big Sleep” which dares to take us away thanx to its dreamy sounding... or the opening song Frail, which gently introduces you the album. Also, there are some rockier and alternating tracks… noticing the « Liberty Bell” hit, “Great Ocean Road” song, the 50’s “Probably Built in the Fifties”, even the wonderful “Travel” which takes you off. “Locked Away” song is special too, only with the guitar flow. Two instrumental tracks are also included in the set: « South American Ghost Ride » and « How to Measure a Planet ? (a 28 minutes track)... a true escape through space.

As a conclusion, HTMAP ? won’t make you speechless. The music really take you to another universe. one the masterpieces performed by the band "
