For those that haven't heard yet, Chile was rocked by a huge magnitude 8.8 earthquake on Saturday, February 27, 2010 at 06:34:14 UTC (3:34:14 AM local time.) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_Chile_earthquake
The is similar to the 1960 earthquake, which was mag. 9.5 and the most powerful earthquake ever recorded.

The tsunami generated by the earthquake is due to arrive here in Australia about now, but is expected to be small. (New Zealand reported a 20cm tsunami.)

My thoughts and best wishes go out to the many Chilean fans of The Gathering.

it was so hard, I live in the center of the country and I've never felt something like that.. nevertheless most damage is on the southern part of country.. 8,8 magnitude is almost a cataclysm.. the basic services are restored in Santiago but there's some problems with communications yet...

this is a well prepared country for quakes, we have three or four moderate quakes every year (4 to 6 richter).... but it was different now... it was a big one my friends, one of the 5 biggest earthquakes ever measured in the world history according specialists, so it's very hard to resist something like that.

there's a lot of aftershocks and tsunami risk in the coast cities now

it's really horrible...

man a 20 cm 'tsunami' is just like a tiny shit wave.... Lets hope it's the same for all the countries under a tsunami threat!

I also have thoughts to everyone in Chile... hoping your family and friends arent affected by the tragedy... I heard from some source it was unbelievably strong... and that most of South America felt it... this sounds scay :(

There were waves up to 1.5m about three hours later. The problem with tsunamis is the length of the wave - even a small tsunami has a lot of water behind it.

I heard an hour ago a journalist from CNN saying with such a thrill in in voice "Japan got a wave of 1.2m" I mean come on...Dont speak about tsunami if it's less than 3m high... if this is the 'tsunami' I bodysurf tsunamis... the way some journalist use this tragic event to make their stories makes me puke...
Hopefully that wont get higher than that anywhere... and hopefully the after shocks will stop fast... But the tone of some journalists... they should be ashamed of themselves...

well... maybe you in europe don't understand how this thing works... there're bad journalists, nobody can deny that.. but a tsumani is not just a big wave as movies show, yes, that can happen... but sometimes, most times actually, the sea just enters several meters to the cities... it´s like a massive water course entering through the streets, sometimes slowly but inevitably at the same time... and 1 or 2 meters higher than normal sea level is enough to flood houses, to damage cars or whatever... some sandy lands could be affected and building foundations fail... so, at least in this case, it's not that spectacular as you wish, but it's destruction anyway.

well, hollywood movies are very funny, but you must try to read some books too my friend..

I know exactly how tsunami works... I hadn't my first contact with the phenomena in december 2004...
But unless you live in a coastal area that is rather flat, a 1m wave wont do much harm... and I blame some media to have make this tsunami alert way bigger than it actually was.
Now this said, I do not underestimate the shock Chile has experienced... This earthquake has surely destroy more in Chile than anywhere else... (while the 2004 earthquake was most destructive through the tsunami, not through the shock itself) that's all what I want to point out

This is horrible. As soon as I heard of this, I thought of the many members of the gathering community there. I hope everyone is okay.

Yeah it's all pretty horrible, I've experienced earthquakes like that, and they're not much fun.

It's great that the band is giving a concert. Very humanistic, thank you! :D

I really hope this is idea and desire to do something for Chile will become a concrete plan soon!! When I heard they wanted to do it, I was touched.. if I'd been Chilean I think I would have hug them all at once :D

well... I don't think that you have experienced earthquakes like this my friend... unless you have been here in Valdivia, Chile in 1960 (9,6), Alaska in 1964 (9,2), Sumatra in 2004 (9,1), Russia in 1954 (9,0), or Concepción, Chile 10 days ago (8,8)... so "not much fun" is not correct way to describe it, I guess

about TG gig, well... it's a very nice idea actually... I hope it's carried out...

Thoughts are with the Chilean people, still think it's kinda weird that they don't spend that much attention to it, cause of the recent happenings in Haiti....

Btw, kinda strange: I just read that Anneke is playing at a Dutch concert for Chile. And TG is not playing there. Now I don't wanna judge on Anneke, but if TG weren't invited to join that event I think she's selfish. But can't say that at this moment since I don't knoiw if TG was even invited or not!

my thoughts are with chilean people too.

anyway, I don't care about Anneke decision performing for chile and her opinion toward the band. This is childish today to me to do such comparisons. That's her right as an artist.... such as TG one. A good one.

wtf, I'm not making any comparisons, I was just expressing thoughts about a concert and just asked myself whether or not TG was/should be invited or not...just curious, not comparing
