In the wilderness called earth
There was my birth
Standing upon hard ground
No sound, nothing to feel
Who could heal?

Ever since doom existed
It made everything look twisted
It is invisible, but it is real
No sound, nothing to feel
Just an early bird

It's light inside you gives strength
Don't you know it's length?
Faith can be straight for now
And touchable somehow

Ever since you existed
No noise, nothing to feel
Who could heal?

A circle
Two dots
And half a circle
Is she happy?
Or is she sad?

For there is no time
To solve it all
To deal with all

For there is no way
To sleep with pain
To laugh in rain

For there is no sound
To hear and cry
To feel and die

For there is no life
To live without

Ahead of it's time
He stood there and laughed
For your history
And his symphony

Forced to create
He sat there and wrote
For his memory
And our symmetry

Say so for a time he went on
But now fallen down to the ground
Destroyed by the tongue
Influcenced the young
The end of an era forsaken

Down on feet
Open mind
Why are they so blind?

He stood there and cried
For your memory

Big cheese, make me
Mine says, go to the office
Big cheese, make me
Mine says, what they say
Black is black
Trade it back
We were enemies
Sure you are, but what am I
Your enemies

Big lies, make mine
Mine says, go to office
Big cheese, make me
Mine says, what they say

Black is black
Trade it back
We were enemies
She eats glue, how bout you?

Hitler's First Photograph (by Wislawa Szymborska/ translated by Barnczak & Cavanagh)

And who's this litlle fellow in his itty- bitty robe?
That's tiny baby Adolf, the Hitlers' little boy!
Will he grow up to be an LL.D?
Or a tenor in Vienna 's Opera House?
Whose teensy hand is this , whose litlle ear nad eye and nose?
Whose tummy ful of milk , we just don't know:
printer's,doctor's, merchant's,priest?
Where will those tootsy-wootsies finally wander?
To a garden , to a school, to an office, to a brode,
maybe to the Burgermeister's daughter?

Precious litlle angel, mommy's sunshine, honeybun
while he was bing born a yerar ago
there was no dearth o sings on the earth and in the sky
spring sun, geraniums in windows,
the organ grinder's music in the yard,
a lucky fortune wrapped in rosy paper,
the just befor the the labor his mother fateful dream:
a dove seenin a dram mean joyful news,
if it is caught,a long awaited gueat will come.
Knock knock, who's there, it's Adolf heartchen knocking.

A little pacifer,diaper,ratlle,bib
our bouncing boy, thank Godand knock on wood, is well
looks just like his folks. like kitten in a basket,
like the tots in every other family album
Shush, let's not start crying, sugar,
the camwera will click from under that black hood

The Klinger Atelier Grabenstasse,Bernau
and Bernau is a small but worthy town,
honest businesses ,obliging neighbors,
smell of yeast dough , of gray soap.
No one hears howling dogs, or fate's footsteps.
A history teacher loosens his collar
and yawns over homework

A sound of thunder
A glimpse of rain
Nothing to obtain
And you are so lonely

No place to find
No other kind
All is lost forgood
And you are so lonely

Now it is clear
Now it is here
This is what we seek
And you are so lonely

Death, the most dreaded of evils,
is therefore of no concern to us;
for while we exist death is not present,
and when death is present we no longer exist.

K.K. Baczynski
Elegy

Clouds of flight, sails of ecstasy, trees' companions
upon the firmament.
My head declines to knotted hands, a head in throes,
My arms hunger.
The tall dark bird that swims beneath you:
my heart.
How do I flee anxiety to golden woods
O bird-clouds?
How then do I return, in grief, undone,
to your fluidity and flight?
Hands pierced, the cross follows me,
the duty of death.
This unworked clay thus heaps up, hardens,
cities are ablaze.
On earth am I my own grave,
my own hope?
O silent clouds! You bypass me again, o lights afloat,
distant shades.
Faith I'll name you. Your name for me: grief's dust,
casket, man.

September 1942

and Baczynski again

"Evil Lullaby"
The scent of autumn leaves and of your hair,
fear’s broken timepiece ticking. Summer’s candles
blown out; the stars breathe down cold air
while my grief
like some dark beast runs nightly to your hand.

Do you know how to sleep? Dead alder trees
weep, howling long into the dome of night.
Without a goal, we roam on portless seas;
you know so well how sorrow lurks in wait.
The kindly dragon; now is the sleep of ghosts
frozen; night’s lofty monument is waning.
Only a phantom cries, on pitchfork hoist,
only the mewling catas the moon is drowning.
Do you know how to sleep? The crazy poet
has hanged himself amind the pines’ dark baying,
while rain drags by the hair a dead wax puppet
through endless streets, to windblown music playing.

Sleep;
all’s quiet now.
The night rains on the windows, gathering power;
blinded like me, the wind kneels at our home.
Who stole from us this carefree time of ours,
my little one?

The bravest animals in the land
Are Captain Beaky and his band.
That's Timid Toad. Reckless Rat.
Artful Owl and Batty Bat.
They march through the woodland Singing songs
That tell how they have righted wrongs

Once Hissing Sid, an evil snake
Kept the woodland folk awake
In fear and trembling every night
In case he gave someone a bite.
Said Artful Owl, 'We'll lie in wait
And one of us will be the bait.'

Said Captain Beaky, 'Have no fear
For I alone will volunteer.'
'No make it me,' said Reckless Rat,
'I'll stand there in my reckless hat
When Hissing Sid picks up my trail
I'll just lasso him with my tail.'
'Good idea,' said Timid Toad,
'We'll hide a long way down the road.
And when you've overcome resistance
We'll rush along to your assistance.'

Said Batty Bat, 'I've got a wheeze,
I'll fly and hide up in the trees.
If Hissing Sid should slither by,
I'll drop a boulder from the sky.'
Said Artful Owl, 'The idea's sound.
How will you lift it off the ground ?'
Poor Batty Bat just scratched his head,
'1 hadn't thought of that, he said.

Said Owl, 'The rest of us hold back,
There's only one that he'll attack.'
Said Timid Toad, 'I like your plan.'
'Good luck,' said Owl, 'For you're the man'
So Timid Toad, his eyes a-popping,
Into the woodland night went hopping.
Captain Beaky waved his hand
Followed with. his trusted band
That's Artful Owl and Reckless Rat.
Above the trees flew Batty Bat.

'Stop, 'said Beaky, 'I hear squeaking.'
'It's Batty Bat,' said Owl, 'He's speaking
'It's all in code,' said Reckless Rat.
Said Owl, 'I'll just decipher that.'
A dash, a dot, two short, two long,
I rather hope I've got it wrong.
It reads, can clearly see the road.
Hissing Sid has captured Toad.'
'Quick men,' said Beaky, 'No delay,
You mustn't let him get away.'
And leaping off, said, 'Follow me,'
And ran head first into a tree
'Dot -dot -dot,' squeaked Batty Bat.
Said Beaky, 'Quick, decipher that.'
Cried Reckless Rat, 'Perhaps we're gaining
'No' said Owl 'He says it's raining.'

Oh how they ran to save poor Toad,
For they must find that Snake's abode.
Guided by old Batty Bat,
Dot - dot, go this way, Dash go that.
Then Hissing Sid's lair they espied.
Were they too late ? Was he inside ?
Said Reckless Rat, 'I'll get a pole,
And stop him going down his hole.'
Then into sight the Snake came hopping,
Right past his hole, no sign of stopping
Said Reckless Rat, 'That's rather funny,
There's something jumping in his tummy.'
Said Captain Beaky, 'Well, I'm blowed,
Hissing Sid has swallowed Toad.'
And as the Snake hopped out of sight,
Off they chased into the night.

At last they found him, tired and dizzy
And pulled out Toad, who said, 'Where is he ?
For left alone, I felt quite sick
And hopped into a hollow stick.'
Said Owl, 'A clever step to take,
You jumped into that Slippery Snake.'
'That was brave of Toad,' said Rat.
'That's just my sort of plan,' said Bat.
Said Captain Beaky to his men,
'We'll not see Hissing Sid again.'
And as they marched off down the road,
They sang in praise of Timid Toad.
Above them flew old Batty Bat,
With his wings stretched out quite flat.
Owl's idea, that clever fellah,
To have a flying umberella.

The bravest animals in the land
Are Captain Beaky and his band.
That's Timid Toad. Reckless Rat. Artful Owl and Batty Bat.
March through the woodland Singing songs
That tell how they have righted wrongs

I venture to post some of my own... 8)

Again the secret door is closing
Before I've stepped across the line
That parts me off the sides and times
Which I long for like rose frozen
Has just one wish for summerlight

Once more the key's hole' size's too narrow
To look at least with just one eye
At mighty rocks attacked with tide
And how SunGod sends down his arrows
Into black shield of Goddess-Night

And oaken planks're so tough to door-post!
No feeble sound they penetrate
At thousand time I am too late
To burst into this plains like ghost
And be torn out by hurricanes

Again the wood I've felt with my palms
Is disappearing and my eyes
No longer see the giant pikes
And magic streams and ruined columnes...
The Tale is over...Dreamworld dies.

Thus 8)

Death is before me today:
Like the recovery of a sick man,
Like going forth into a garden after sickness

Death is before me today:
Like the odor of myrrh,
Like sitting under a sail in a good wind.

Death is before me today:
Like the course of a stream
Like the return of a man from the war-galley to his house.

Death is before me today:
Like the home that a man longs to see,
After years spent as a captive.

(From Sandman....song about Death)

Lost in light of strangest windows
One on one with autumn rains
Nights and days combined in chain
Emptiness feels like a Hydra's
Long dead heart enthralled by hunger
Iron sword succumbed to rust
No shadows left to cast
Ended time drifts torn asunder

So hallowed be it's grandeur!-
Sorrow I had to adjust
