The banner reads 'down with the government of murderers'

On the night of 6th December police in Exarchia Square in Athens shot and killed in cold blood Alexandros Grigoropoulos, aged 15. Police say that Grigoropoulos was among a gang of youths who attacked them. The 37-year-old officer who shot Grigoropoulos says he fired warning shots to disperse the crowd, though witnesses charge that he pointed his gun at the young boy and discharged it once.

Clashes here rarely grow as big as those that have wracked my country for the past 3 days

This murder sparked riots that spread to almost all our towns and cities

You remember 3 or 4 years ago, the whole cities of France were having about 100 cars burnt every night... it was the result of something similar...
At least in your case, it seems that people get their anger directly at the authorities... (or not? cause I havent followed very much the news the last 10 days)

These riots are a totally out of proportion reaction.

They are not only about the death of that boy... If in the last time Greece did well economically, I heard that this economic growth was hiding some harsh social reality...
It was the same in France, the reactions of 3 years ago were way too strong regarding to the starting event... but the reality is that these riots are just a way to show for a generation to express their reject of the system and their need for change...

If you start with over reacting, look how the first WW started... by the simple assassination of a Serbian leader... (and back then you had many leaders' murders)

^ Yeah I agree.

It's sad that these things happen, but to be honest, I only wish they'd happen here. When people do a protest here, they just burn some tyres and throw some eggs. Geez uhh wow, great doing! That why things are like they are here, because the government knows that the people won't do anything. If they only listened to some Thrash or something....

yes it is true that these riots result from the general dissatisfaction with the country's economic hardship and the social inequality in general :-|

and now Athens rioting into 2nd week. A slogan (spray-painted) outside the Bank of Greece summed up the mood: "Merry crisis and a happy new fear."

In my opinion it's good.
People must not forget after a couple of weeks and holidays and celebrations mean absolutely nothing

ewww... so that's really the shit.

We can follow greek news in french magazine and newspapers. We can't easily see what's true or not as long as we don't live it.

In France the situation didn't come that serious and was different. There are a lot of trolls in our country, in search for free violence, driven by violence. 3 years went by and cars are still burnin in the streets. Gangs are still fighting against cops. So there were a lot of media bidding too in 2005. I still remember my foreign family calling us on the phone, asking us if it was war ?? pff... We were laughing at them, because there was nothing.
The further you lived from the event, the bigger the impact was.

Let's hope the situation will be better soon.

Take care people.

There's no point in magnifying or dramatizing a situation. Sympathy is the last thing I feel for the police, but linking their pathetic street presence to a junta is naive to say the least. As for how a junta really looks like, I believe none of us has the slightest clue and we should be grateful for that.

To give you an example of junta:
"One of the worst incidents in Burma took place during the Uprising of August 1988, when millions of Burmese marched throughout the country calling for an end to military rule. Soldiers shot hundreds of protesters and killed an estimated 3,000 people in the following weeks. During the August and September demonstrations of 2007, at least 30 protesters were shot and killed. Many were tortured. The army continues to engage in brutal military offensives against ethnic minority populations, committing atrocities that violate international humanitarian law."

^ Yeah I think that sophie doesn't know what a "junta" is, that's serious stuff. I live in a 3rd-world country, and there are lots of protests (the biggest one against http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAFTA ), but nothing like a junta  .

Ahhh ok :p . Care to talk a bit about the Greek Junta?

And thanks for asking. I personally am ok, I was at a friend's house with my girl in a place a bit near the epicentre, so the earthquake felt quite strong. No damages on my house, I'm glad my "mechas" didn't fall  . But there's a lot of destruction in the epicentre, lots of deaths and lots of people without a home, and about $100 million in damages. We've (we as in my family and I) have donated food, and since my sister is in 4th year of medicine she went and helped around a bit. Again, thanks for asking :) .

ok, i am glad you and your family are ok, i wish you all the best :flower:

oh just to give you some information about the greek jounta, we are talking about a series of (right-wing military) governments that ruled my country from '67 to '74. Jounta started in 1967 with a coup d'état led by a group of colonels of the military.
As about their ideology, jounta wanted to "protect" the country from "communist takeover". Lefties were their major enemies, they used the term "anarcho-communists" to describe all these people. Nationalism and christianity were promoted.

in my way of view (bear in mind that i am emigre, half cypriot :D ) their biggest mistake was the The Cyprus fiasco (the Cypriot president, was overthrown with the help of the junta and Turkey replied to this intervention by invading Cyprus and occupying the northern part of the island, after heavy fighting (with casualties  )with the Cypriot and Greek Force for Cyprus.

In 1973 there was massive demonstration of against the junta an open anti-junta revolt tat ended in bloodshed but because of those students we are free now :D :flower:
