Soon (maybe I'll start with it tonight) I'll test importing all (390.000) posts from this forum (phpBB software version 2) into the new forum (version 3).
Then we'll know if the new full forum is slower (as slow as this forum) as the almost empty new forum.

Well to be honest the test forum ain't that much faster... i think it only is because its database is almost empty thus faster to load. :S

You think? I'd say it's a lot faster, I feel it performs like a regular forum. And by the way, as I said I'm no expert at this, but I sincerely doubt that it's the size of the database that is causing the problems. There are fora with much greater amounts of content that have been up for years and they run with no problems whatsoever.

I think the problem is probably with the current server and its limited capacities.

@ Martijn: Cool, I'm curious to see how that will go.

The phpBB3 test forum is running at a different server of the same hosting company. Another forum, http://phorum.surrealm.net with 46.000 posts, is running at this hosting company too.

When the other server / phpBB version 3 doesn't contribute to the speed, then I'll have a look at reducing database size: deleting old posts (of general sections; I want to keep as much as possible from the The Gathering and music sections) and deleting inactive users.

It is ridiciolusly slow!
I mean, just from pressing the button "postreply" till the page is loaded took this time 36 seconds.
And to preview this comment took 48 seconds.
And to post a comment can take up to several minutes or will not be posted at all.
Mostly just wanna read through the new posts, but I have to plan that very well, being prepared for some hours at my comp.
This situation is inside me building up a strong urge to SCREAM!!!

Just following up, but do you guys have enough control of the server to install
and run nginx to do reverse proxying for Apache server? My other post on this
topic covered more details and I'll be in Finland if you guys want to chat
about it more in detail.

There is something wrong with the forum....I have been posting freely for the past hour with only one (1) "Critical error" screen!! :o

It's OK today, but it's probably a matter of time before it starts again... and I still think it's not the size of the database that's causing the problem.

It's not OK today man. It's tragic. Or semi-tragic,whatever.

My opinion is that it's not just the server of the company, but the whole company with these servers suck.

It's just a forum with 500MB posts,wow what a burden

Takes an average of 1min to load any page during the day. Better at night when the Europeans are asleep. Feels like the server it's hosted on can't handle the load at peak hours. LOTS of mySQL errors too.

Edit: Just got this 5 times trying to post the message.

Quote:

Please contact the server administrator, webmaster@cyclingcolours.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

The response of the forum remains tragic and embarassing.

...although thousands of posts were deleted.
oh how surprising

what is a forum for if you can't read archives and old messages anymore?

also "deleting" for "posting" .... this drives to nowhere.
