I've just read through this topic again, and I seem to have contradicted myself at least once - about early Genesis. Never mind. Let's move on.

No - progressive will never be quite like the way it was in the 70s. That may be because it'll never gain mainstream pre-eminence in the same way, and that may be because nowadays we have so much more to choose from - there are so many strands.

But another reason why things can't be the way they were is that - like everything else - although what goes around comes around, it comes around differently each time.

For example, just at the moment a lot of people are talking about Riverside - and so they should. This excellent Polish band is set to make waves, I think.

I've been journeying around Amazon, listening to samples from these albums - which are, I think, mostly if not all progressive rock/metal:

The Frost, Milliontown
Sieges Even, Paramount
Thought Chamber, Angular Perceptions
Spheric Universe Experience, Anima
Serenity, Words Untold & Dreams Unlived
Redemption, The Origins of Ruin
The Reasoning, The Awakening
Sylvan, Artificial Paradise

All new stuff to me, and from various parts of the world. So, it can't just be Riverside who have taken off recently in the progressive area.
