Well I just saw something that totally amazed me.. I was thinking "hmm Tangerine Dream is more electronic music, could be interesting" I look for it on emule and I found out that this band has 82 releases in 34 years!!!!
I don't know if it includes singles/remixes and whatever kind of compilation but this is huge!! it's more than 2 release a year!

They have very many soundtracks.

Those who have got a lot (too much?) time on their hands might want to check this thread:

http://www.ultimatemetal.com/forum/show ... p?t=150277

It´s titled "rare prog from early 70s", but it´s not restricted to prog from the 70s.

As for prog rock, I like some old Genesis (Gabriel-era) and Nektar-stuff, though I haven´t been listening to the former for quite a long time now.

My favourite progressive metal album (as well as my overall favourite album) is "Terrestrials" by Atrox - unique vocals, lyrics, cover artwork and music! (But I suppose it´s an acquired taste, especially as far as the vocals are concerned.)

As regards VDGG, I haven´t heard anything by them yet, but the German TV-programme Rockpalast will air a concert which was recorded at the Leverkusener Jazztage 2005 on January 16, 2006. I´ll try to tape it.

oh, I'm not sure about it... this is one of the few prog records I can listen from the beginning to the end :) Also hearing KC live is amazing!

Other prog band I like is White Willow: soft music with pagan influences. Maybe also Anglagard, dark 70s sinthetizer sound..

Note: I do not like Genesis and that kind of bands... :P

Best prog album ever: Awake of Dreamtheater!!! It was the first prog album I got and the first time I put it on I just couldn't listen to it... Difficult stuff if you re not in prog. he he...
amazing rhytms, lyrics, just an amazing album. I'd say its carefully balanced in every aspect.

Somebody erlier wrote about Led Zep not really being a prog band. I think that if we think about their music within the context of the year released, they are a bloody amazing prog band!!!

What do you guys think about Steve Vai? He sounds to me like prog.. Is it just me?

Hello. With apologies, I stand by what I said earlier, more or less. In my opinion (and that's all it is, of course), Led Zep were more blues based than anything else, although I agree that they moved into different territory. My problem with the different territory is that I see it more as folky stuff than progressive stuff.

Led Zep evolved out of the Yardbirds. In fact, most English 1960s white blues people went through either the Yardbirds or John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, or both bands. Included in that list are folk such as Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and the young Jimmy Page. If you watch Antonioni's film Blow Up, there's a sequence in a club in which the Yardbirds, featuring both Beck and Page, are on stage.

Led Zep were going to be called the "New Yardbirds" until someone came up with a better name, more in keeping with the good old psychedelic late 1960s. But my main point is this.

Most (no doubt, not all) of the prog rock bands tried to fuse classical or other influences with rock. There was no need to fuse blues with rock: in those days, blues was rock. OK, so you could fuse blues and classical/folk/other, but surely the rigid structure of blues (certainly Chicago Blues) makes it very difficult to experiment and get very far away from where you began.

I love Passion and Warfare album ... still cult to me.
About Steve Vai, i don't consider him as a Prog guitar player... he's more than that.

just the sound of its Ibanez could remind me of some prog bands like Dream Theater.

as for me the best composition in prog is "ACHILLES LAST STAND'' by LZ and the best album - '' GODBLUFF'' by VDGG.

More on my particular point of view: Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath between them were considered to have launched "heavy metal" in the UK. If you like, it was another Beatles versus Rolling Stones thing (well, to some extent). Heavy metal is not equivalent to 70s progressive rock. Progressive bands, let's say from Pink Floyd through Yes, Genesis and beyond, were doing something different.

If the equation LZ + BS --> Spandex holds, then perhaps (LZ + BS)² = HM.

This, I think, is what we need. A mathematical theory of rock.

KC rules. No matter the album nor the era. Everything is sooo good. Cadence and Cascade sounds so glorious live. Thanks to 21st Century Schizoid Band.

I liked what Green Carnation did to their prog rock/metal: go acoustic. More intimate. Here's a sample.

POS is a great music band... one of my favourite progmetal band...they manage to combine technics and emotions with such grace... they're also nice guys... with a cool sense of humour.

about "BE" it took me long to appreciate this album... as a result i like it much...(nevertheless, my fave still being Remedy Lane)... there's so much styles and to discover listening to this album...

by the way, i just have to say too that "Be" stuffs sound much better and catchy on stage...

Sins Of Arcadia mentioned Dredg earlier. I really like this band but it is
not Prog-Rock. Dredg is classified as Post-Grunge.

Post Grunge?

no.

have you ever heard El Cielo? that's prog/art rock at it's finest. dredg have nothing to do with Grunge.

I have listened to the Catch without Arms-Album of Dredg a few
minutes ago (this was the first time ever i heard songs of dredg).

it reminds me of good 80´s music (especially the singer reminds
me of Music of U2,Morrissey or other Bands from UK) combined
with nice rock/pop Sound that reminds me of some Cure Songs.

There´s nothing at all that reminds me of Grunge or Post-Grunge ... :flower:

'That kind of bands'? Genesis is majestic. Ever heard the old albums from 1970 to 1977? If you don't like them, you don't like symphonic prog at all. ;)

When did they play that song? As far as I know, that song never has been played live.

aZuL wrote that - not me. I like early Genesis, and the Steve Hackett spin-off stuff, which is still basically Genesis, and quite a lot of Peter Gabriel's work after he left the band.

There's an unwritten rule that if you come from Canada, you like Rush.

Therefore I like Rush.

I don't think prog is making a "comeback"; that would imply it becoming as popular as it was in the 70's early 80's, and frankly I don't see that happening. It is still a popular genre, but by no mean can Dream Theater and Opeth eventually claim the fame that Rush or Genesis or APP had.

Still, it's good that these bands are popular. And Opeth are great musicians. If only they could make more Damnation and less growling.
