I can´t really name a favourite genre. All I can say is that nowadays most of the music I listen to (I guess about 95 % or maybe even more) is female-fronted.

Well, if you need genres:

Scandinavian folk (rock) music (e.g. Gåte/Garmarna/Två Fisk Och En Fläsk/Suden Aika/Burlakat/Mari Boine/Hedningarna)
Persian female vocalists (Parissa/Sima Bina/Mahsa Vahdat/Sussan Deyhim)
world music (Dead Can Dance/Egschiglen/The Bulgarian Voices "Angelite")
unique artists/bands of different musical genres (Atrox/Madder Mortem/Voivod/Fear of God/Kate Bush/Kari Bremnes/The Third And The Mortal/Sainkho Namtchylak/Tactile Gemma/The Gathering)

Every now and then, I still listen to some
thrash metal (Coroner/Mekong Delta/early Anacrusis/Détente/early Metallica)
progressive/technical metal (Fates Warning/Psychotic Waltz/Sieges Even/Watchtower)
doom metal (Candlemass/Saint Vitus),
which was my favourite music way back in the eighties/early nineties.

np: Parissa & Ensemble Dastan - "Forud"

I already pm´ed you my answer, but I´ll also post it here:

No, I´m German. But in 1999 I watched a concert by Sima Bina and the female ensemble Hamnawa, which took place at the Weltmusikfestival in Bonn, on German TV and I enjoyed it very much. In 2001 I saw my first concert of Sima Bina and the Ensemble Dastan at the Philharmonie in Cologne. I then saw her again live in 2003 and last year, both times again in Cologne. Last year I also attended my first concert of Parissa and the Ensemble Dastan, again at the Philharmonie in Cologne, where they performed the songs of her new double-CD "Gol-e Behesht". It was an excellent concert and it will also be released on DVD! You can read my review (in English) here. (Someone with whom I got into contact in 2003 via e-mail had asked me, if I would write a report of this concert.)

Finally, I saw a very special concert in Oslo in 2003 featuring - among others - Mahsa and her sister Marjan Vahdat. You can read a report (with photos) in English here. It was a really memorable experience! :D

Very interesting read...the links you provided. Do you by chance know of any links with sound samples of any of the Persian female artists you mentioned?

I know little of it, but have enjoyed the bit I've come to know thus far. Definitely would like to hear more Persian music, but I don't know where to start.....so any recommendations would be appreciated.

Yes, I do. You can download some mp3-files from the official websites of Parissa and Mahsa Vahdat. You can listen to some streaming files at the official website of Sussan Deyhim. And you can also listen to some files on the official website of Sima Bina, though it seems I can´t get them working.

In addition to this also try this videoclip featuring a song by Parissa and the Ensemble Dastan (the sound and picture-qualtiy may not be the best, but it´s enough to give you an idea) and this one showing an impressive percussion-solo (more than three minutes), also from a concert by Parissa and the Ensemble Dastan. (In both cases just right-click and "save target as".) You also find these files (and lots of others - videoclips as well as mp3s - of different Persian artists) at http://www.iranmusic.de in the "Music"-section.

np: Parissa & Ensemble Dastan - "Daramad, Saz-o Avaz"

Thank you to kernel & Burkhard for the Persian music recommendations. Definitely apperciated :flower:

Been pretty busy with work lately, so I haven't had the chance to check many of the links yet, but all the recommenations will surely keep me occupied for awhile.

Luckily I do have a great CD store in the area with a huge world music section, so I plan to preview the artists you listed and buy some of the ones I like best.

@ kernel....to answer your question, no I don't know Persian language. Until recently, I did work with a very nice Persian girl (and her brother for a little while also) She showed me some Farsi. Some writing, the alphabet etc....but I don't know how to speak any. I would've liked to have learned some phrases at least.
