I'd also say they're much more 'popular' now than any of those bands. Or rather, they are remembered more.

Indeed, except for My Bloody Valentine.

Just for fun, last.fm listeners:
My Bloody Valentine - 82,165
Slowdive - 22,822
Lush - 19,448
Ride - 16,344
Curve - 13,897

I'm surprised on Curve, since they were still active in 2005 (but now disbanded).

*edit* The Gathering 24,748 :(

I've never understood the obsession for MBV... Loveless is good, but nowhere near as amazing as people have made it out to be over the years. Their other albums were just awful. Slowdive should be held in a higher regard IMO.

MBV has a powerful mood feeling - A good example was the use of one of their song at the end of "Lost in Translation" - it felt so great. It definitely does not have the best vocals, and the guitar work is much messier than the rest of the shoegazing scene. However, I feel the music penetrate through the skin rather than the ears when listening to MBV... Not sure if that's the best explanation, but oh well.

Slowdive were the mellower band; they were not as brutal as Ride or (early)-Lush were (read, screechy), and because of that, the music might have withstood the test of time better than the other bands. It's hard to understand nowadays what songs like Seagull or Dreams Burn Down brought to the scene.

Or it's possible that Mojave 3 and Rachel continued to do music, as opposed to all the others bands disappearing, except for Miki who kept being a brat.

By all means, I like all of these bands ;)

I discovered this band in 2005 after seeing Mysterious Skin movie at the theatre.

the soundtrack was a great skill. When i got the DVD, I ripped the first song at the beginning without even knowing it was Slowdive band. then I started listening very oftenly in the player.

After searching and searching and finally,I learned the performed song was entitled "Golden Hair". funny.

got listened to some others songs, but Golden Hair is the best i have heard yet.

its really good shoegaze....

that gives me a good reason to post in here now ^^

Lush and Curve were far too "happy go-lucky" for my liking. Their music is often even comedic, something that I don't enjoy in my music. I like how Slowdive & My Bloody Valentine are dark, yet sound so uplifting, yet drown you in sound...it's impossible to describe.

Loveless & Souvlaki are amongst my most prized records....I honestly listen to Loveless in its entirety almost every day.

Lush is just a great pop rock band. I don't think their music has something to do in this topic, well to me.
