I loved them since Catch the Breeze came out in the early 90's.

Back then, Ride, Lush, My Bloody Valentine, Chapterhouse, Curve... that was a great time :) Saw Lush and Curve 2-3 times each, great shows.

I discovered Slowdive with " Pygmalion" , the best album for me..

I saw them 3 times actually, once for Doppelganger/Pubic Fruit, once of Cuckoo and a third time opening for Jesus and Mary Chain (I think Mazzy Star was at that show, I saw JAMC 3 times too and I can't recall if it was the same show).

I actually had the chance to meet Toni and Dean at the radio station I was DJ'ing (I didn't do the interview, another DJ did, but I was around and met them). Dean was a great guy, Toni was a little cold, had the feeling she didn't really like to do interviews.

That night (the Cuckoo tour), one guy in the audience shouted "Smile Toni!". They were between songs, she motioned the band not to start playing the next song yet and proceeded lecture the guy in the audience about how she'll be smiling whenever she wants. Poor guy was red like a beet.

She is quite sexy when she pouts too. ;)

Curve was a great great band, that's a pity cause I really think they were the pré Garbage's sound.

Well, according to Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toni_Halliday

Quote:
Her style of singing - influenced at the same time by the deep warm tone of Chrissie Hynde and the more exotic neo-Goth warble of the Cocteau Twins' Liz Fraser - was to influence Shirley Manson, vocalist of American post-grunge pop-rockers Garbage, who appropriated from Curve's template and turned it into what was ultimately mainstream fodder with the trappings of 'edge'.

Might depends of your age, and maybe your location too. They dissolved about 10 years ago, and even then, Pygmalion, their last album, was not widely released.

Also, while Slowdive were great, they were not as popular as Ride, Lush or Curve.

The most commercial one is Souvlaki; it's the one with When the Sun Hits and the catchy Souvlaki Space Station. I would definitely start with this one.

Pygmalion was more experimental, a move toward becoming Mojave 3 in my opinion.

To me though the overall best is Just for a Day, their first one. The song Primal is so good, raw emotions, an incredible finale. It is more in the style of Curve (original Curve, their "Coast is Clear" - Pubic Fruit, not the Chinese Burn and after era), Ride, Chapterhouse.

The Happy Valley Sound (the shoegazing movement from the UK) was an interesting albeit short lived scene. But back then, short lived scenes was the fad; the Manchester had lasted all of 2 years, after all.

*quick edit* If you wanna try another band, and probably the two most important shoegazing albums -> My Bloody Valentine - Loveless and Ride - Nowhere. Amazing albums.

Yet Slowdive were infinitely better than all of those bands.

I'd also say they're much more 'popular' now than any of those bands. Or rather, they are remembered more.
