Hmm. No prominent topic about the arrival of Anette Olzon, or about the new song samples. If you're curious, go to http://www.nightwish.com and investigate. Not everything is quite how you'd expect it to be.

I think the new singer can sing very well, and she is going to be have a big carreer with NW. When I was listenig at first to the sample of Eva a few days ago, the song and the voice were very strange for me. But on Friday I got the whole song, and have listen to it lots of times and I thing the song is very great especially the gospel choir under the chorus. And Anette's voice fints into it very well. :D Anneke is my all time favourite singer, and maybe Anette will be my second one. :D I like them both. :D

My thoughts about the tree other samlples:

Seven Days To The Wolves: Great! This song is a very good duet between Marco and Anette. And the violin in the beginning... ! :D

Master Passion Greed: Good guitar line in the beginning, Marco sings amazing, and I like the typical Nightwish drum part at the end of the sample.

Amaranth: Wow! Great! The choir is amazing an Anette sings lovely. I think this song can be the next single. Very good chorus easy to remember it's melody :D I like it!

Can't wait to hear the whole new album. We'll see in September! :D

I'm not entirely a fan of "old Nightwish", even though the gig that they did in Bradford shortly before they sacked Tarja was very enjoyable. I have a couple of albums, but they don't get played much. I am, however, very intrigued by the whole saga, and I'm waiting with interest to see how things turn out. After all, here's a very successful band with a big following that chose to sack their "figurehead". That's quite some risk-taking.

Some of the old material is a bit too dreamy/"romantic" for my tastes. I'm hoping for something different in this new era, and the samples do seem to suggest a change. Marco has done some good work (I think) with Delain, and perhaps that kind of experience has helped.

a big turn off for me was Tarja in general, but I am actually liking what I heard with Anette already. I might just buy the new album after all.

Her voice is more delicate than Tarja's one (even if I liked her very much).
I've heard just the new song EVA and there she reminds me also Sharon from Within Temptation

In addition to the new female singer, also Marco Hietala seems to have a more important 'singer' role in the group now.

I've always hated Nightwish for different reasons: the first records have a power metal sound and I hate this kind of music, plus I've never like Tarja, as a person, as a singer, all of her.
I think there's something good on ONCE but I can't manage to listen to the whole album in a row.

But I bought the new DARK PASSION PLAY and I like it very much. It has no power metal influences at all, it's just heavy rock with orchestral big moments, and Anette voice is simple but beautiful and not boring.

Anette has a touch of ABBA at times - but apart from ABBA, how many Swedish bands can you name? (Scandinavians needs not apply. ;)

My least favourite parts are "Master Passion Greed" (too much metal cliches, doesn't sound like Nightwish) and the spoken words sections in "The Poet and the Pendulum". The rest can't be compared to the earlier albums with Tarja, but doesn't need to be - it's great! (I agree with Burn: too music opera really is too much. :)

That said, the album covers a lot of ground - it's experimenting with what can be done than what should be done. "Angels Fall First" seems the same in many way, and I expect the next album will be much better and tighter. Bring it on! :D

I only like The Cardigans, if we are speaking of female fronted (and not metal) bands...also Sahara Honights a bit, if we extend to male vocalists there are tons of bands...

Fair point, and a good answer! I guess I meant female-lead bands since that's mostly what I listen to. I know the Cardigans, but didn't know they were Swedish.
"Lovefool" was widely played on radio here in Australia, and to a lesser extent some of their other tracks e.g. "My Favourite Game".
Of the songs I know, Nina doesn't have the "Abba" sound; my apologies to Swedes for that generalisation.

However, Anette does have the "Abba" sound at times e.g. "Heaven has a darkened face" (in "Sahara".) Assuming that I'm not imagining things, there must be something in common behind the two for an Aussie to pick up on? (A regional dialect, a particular "school" of music, something else?)

Cheers.

Well, Anette is a big change after Tarja's vocals. But I do still like Nightwish. Took me some time getting used to this new sound, but I think I'm used to it now and I see this latest release as a CD as good as any of their previous ones.
