On last Saturday night, had the chance to watch the Roseland NYC Live DVD for the very first time.
It was also the first time Portishead was performing in front of my eyes. For sure this experience is different from a true gig…but anyway that was a nice kick in my head. Something I realized and do enjoy about P is how natural and serious they do play for their audience. Far from typical "M'as tu vu" or "hey people, watch us, we rock!" style, my admiration for this band is now getting bigger and bigger.
Beth Gibbons is becoming one of my fave singers too. Very charismatic, she appeared in the screen like someone very reflective, fragile... so human to me. I always liked some Portishead songs in the past, especially the famous "Glory Box" and "Roads" songs….but last week end, I felt something really different... floaty emotions… the light was revealed when "Strangers" performance started. a Pearl !
Well, the impact was so big the dvd was played twice in the same evening (including the vids).

yeah, Strangers is always a very underrated song, but it's my favourite from Dummy.

yes, Strangers structures and atmosphere are very various. the way the final melody surrounds you (especially with the 5.1 version on DVD) is awesome.

Looking at P old stuffs, my faves are also and still "Roads" but "Half Day Closing", "To Kill a Dead Man" "All Mine" and "Cowboys".
a bit fed up with "Glory Box" currently (too much media bidded)

Best album of their career... Its moody, atmospheric, dark... the lyrics and singing are on top form. It should have been the first album!
