Hey does anyone know this English band? A brand new favourite for me, met their name in Holland in October, bought the album "The Dark Third" and I can't even nuke it out from my CD player, it's so great!

Strongly recommanded in case you meet their name.

Yeah bit spacey, bit atmospheric, but it has also its wild, uncombed punky moments... And what I like best is that they use lots of vocals (both female and male) and I'm fond of good-written vocals...

it's stupid I know.. but just the name riverside sounds so cheap that I never dared to get a listen... maybe I could enjoy some prog rock since a week I dig into the 70s of Pink Floyd :p

Try it. Its not bad. It has sort of Pink Floyd'ish feel but after a wile it starts sound all the same.

Riverside (thinking of Second Life Syndrome): Some wonderful moments of drama, with a darker edge than old 1970s progressive. The trouble is, it's one of those really good albums that you might end up listening to so much that eventually you have to stop. You stop because you've memorised it - you know what's coming next.

Pure Reason Revolution (again The Dark Third): Much more complicated than Riverside - a diferent approach altogether. Yes, it's good, but you're never going to memorise it!

Riverside succeed where Porcupine Tree succeed. Old 1970s progressive often failed because of pure excess. The bands that got the tightest grip on it (for me, King Crimson) did well because they kept it under control. Pure Reason Revolution run the risk of losing that control. Well, that's my view anyway.

Examples of a couple of fairly recent albums that I always enjoy because they keep on taking me by surprise are Contentum by Atrox, and To-Mera's Transcendental.

Hehe I somehow managed it :green:
Guess it depends how much you've digged into it.
