I've been following this band for a few years and enjoy most of their discography but I'm still left to wonder why they decided to sign with Roadrunner records. Given RR's track record (they've pretty much sucked since Sepultura lost cavalera, in my opinion) I'm not sure how this band will turn out but I don't think it'll be pretty either. Will they turn into another trend like Dragonfarce? How do you guys think it will affect them?

Weel, I have to say since Sixth Degree of Inner Turbulence, I cant listen to Dt anymore... that mentioned album had a couple of good songs but the eponymous track was a complete disaster in my opinion.
Then if the band was style singed by East West, I guess that's not a bad move to go from a major subdivision where they were only one band amongst others to a smaller structure where they will be one of the big band.
Moreover, since Sixth Degree each band members has so many various project and collaboration that DT became their "metal" project... so signing with RR aint too bad...

But as I said, it's about 6 years I stopped listening to them...

I was a fan... was also suscribed to Your Majesty

sometimes I listen to their songs especially from when Dream and Day unite to Scenes from a Memory era . Musically, the listening doesn't please me as before, but it reminds great moments of nostalgia ... my past student life.

my favourite songs are still "a Change of Seasons" and "Scarred".

This band has gotten way out of control with the music. Images & Words, Awake are great. I like Scenes From A Memory, but only a song or two after that album.

They have become the Yngwie of the Prog genre.

You could try out Hoyry-Kone, Dun, Aghora (progressive metal) and Eskaton. They're all pretty obscure so if you're interested, let me know and I'll link you to their albums.

Hmm, see, this is where I get confused on the definition of "progressive". I can usually tell when something is progressive but I can't tell you what exactly makes progressive progressive (I blame my lack of studying the characteristics between prog bands).. but I do know that just because someone plays in odd time signatures that doesn't necessarily make them progressive (this is especially true in Tool's case).

Edit: but if you're recommending bands like Death, why not throw in Sound of Perseverance? :) And for another heavy band, how about Nevermore's "Enemies of Reality"? (I'm pretty sure this one is prog thrash)

Edit on edit: lol prog trash

Bands like tool or a perfect circle played something kind of new .That's what i call progressive.
it's all about the progress of music and not about playing 100 things in two minutes

Meh, this is where genres get confused. :/ This might be a stronger argument if I knew the more technical aspects of this genre but I don't hear anything progressive in Tool's instrumentation at all.

So when you listen to Tool it reminds you many different things, right?

Because when i listen to Tool it doesnt remind me of anything else.
And you will understand from the first second what you are listening to

Funny that the polemy about the word "progressive" comes out in a Dream Theater topic.
They are rather a degressive band nowadays... :o

And new album coming this year. New DVD and world tour next year. Déja vu (not a strange one). It's rather an album manufacture now.

I think Jordan Rudess killed the band's creativity. :tw:

I share your opinion completely about DT... But I believe what killed their creativity is more the multiplication of side projects... I dont kow if ruddess still use the same keyboards, but if so, what also killed the band are the sounds he sues... fucking 80s :S
