+1 . i love this riff too.

Three or Four of my favourites which are coming to my mind:

Pearl Jam "Jeremy" (bass lines intro with harmonic)
Machine Head "Davidian" (the whole song except the solos)
Dream Theater "Scarred" (the guitar ending and this is the same riff you can hear in Psycho Love song from Skid Row band)

Hmmm... Interesting one :D

Favourite riffs right now, counting "common" ones and others together. Writing down everything that comes, picking out one at the end by all instruments:

GUITAR
Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Blank Planet (which always makes me remember my first PT concert), Trains, Signify, and 60 ton other riffs I forgot.
Opeth - The Leper Affinity: beginning theme (pure energy), theme at 6:08, ending theme.
And of course the end of Deliverance. Bleak. Heir Apparent.
Well. To be honest, most of the Opeth themes are. Honestly. I've digged really into this band since playing in a tribute and it's just ... waaaahhh. Y'all know.
Pain of Salvation - Undertow
A Perfect Circle - Judith
The Doors - The End
Korn - Falling Away From Me, Blind (yes I do love Korn...found some great moments in it, digging deeper a bit)
In Flames - Only for a Week
My Dying Bride - Cry of Mankind (the endless guitar melody and everything coming under it)
Iron Maiden - Moonchild (beginning themes, both guitar and synth)
Nevermore - Dreaming Neon Black clean opening riff, Believe in Nothing, his Godless... main theme.
Some Anathema: heavy riff in Release, the whole Harmonium - theme (both keys and guitar, as great as simple), Temporary Peace,... some others.

For favourite TG guitar riff I had to think long - but I think Great Ocean Road is the winner.

And my all-time fav 4 tunes are the Eb-B-C-A in Shine on You Crazy Diamond. Dot. And the second place goes for Tool's Lateralus.

KEYS

Hmmm. Almost everything played by Kevin Moore. If it counts as a "riff", my vote goes for Space-Dye West.
Love Street by the Doors' Ray Manzarek.
Favourite TG: Broken Glass, BLD and A Life All Mine.
Some Depeche Mode. Can't really think after. There's alllot.
Balance - Closer by Anathema. (Same reasons as by Fear of a Blank Planet).
Opeth: Lotus Eater - "Super Mario"-theme (5:48); Hessian Peel 2:23.

My most beloved piano track is not metal, not rock but from a soundtrack. It's from the anime "Spirited Away", "The 6th station". The most beautiful piano masterpiece ever.

BASS

Hehe, there's a lot. Some of John Myung like Learning to Live- ending theme, Lifting Shadows and Voices opening themes.
Colin Edwin plays some, too. Glass Arm Shattering, Halo, Start of Something Beautiful.
Lots of Opeth themes. Bleak - 6:40 (although it goes together with the guitar. Still...) for example. And the fretless themes of DeFarrala, too. To Bid YOu Farewell... some of my favs.
Gravity from APC.
Rush: Ghost Rider.
Tool: Wings pt. II., yeah, Sober, 46 & 2 (although always having trouble with Home from DT)
TG: break in Broken Glass; end of Souvenirs; Illuminating (simplicity rules)

All-time favourite? Hm. I think Start of Something Beautiful is pretty close. But I try really hard to write it one day myself :green:

Pretty long list. I always write down everything that comes.

:flower:

Nobody considered to mention the guitar part around 3-4 minutes in the Leaves song, by TG themselves?
Or the guitar part when the song changes in Tiamat's Do You Dream Of Me? I think it's epic!

You noticed that as well! I had written it down as being Nintendo, but Super Mario comes close as well... :)

Hoang and Daeron, I believe there are no words to describe how enormous your musical knowledge is... And people say to me that I know a lot of music, no way... :P

Thanks Saturtjin. but no worry, your time will come too if you expect so... for yourself.

well, I don't think my music knowledge is big. There's plenty of bands and artists i don't know. I'm very serious. Some of my friends are sick music lover in a different sphere and know bands i've never heard before.

No hard feeling too but I don't care about this music knowledge which is that important for so many music lover in this board or elsewhere...

Music just give me good time during the days...
Knowledge and taste is personal and can be reductive for each person. In this very last case, It doesn't make these people less interesting in life at all too.

listening seriously to music very early for sure helped me to expand my taste... there was a time the intensity was absolutely outta limits. Sometimes it still remains.
but meeting people from different horizons and living new and different experiences with them, well, that changed my view of life and music..

to conclude, enjoying life is the key of (music) knowledge.

cheers.

Haha, just wait until I'll be working at OOR (Dutch music magazine) ;) Then I'll talk to you again about this, hoang :)

But, seriously, those are wise words you are speaking there (: I know it's not a very important issue whether or not you have a big musical knowledge, but I was just impressed by it.

To which I have to add - to get on topic again - that I am soooo heavily in love with every single section, layer and note of every possible imaginable instrument in Black Light District... The keyboard intro, the bass part (live) after Anneke has sung for the first time (that's the very only thing I have about this song that's not perfect: in the studio version it's too slow!), the guitar thing in part I and during Anneke's second time she's singing... It's just unbelievably beautiful... :)

Good night to all!

[Hole Spammer] Anything Eric Erlandson composed for Hole... It's very Thurstoon Moore influenced or inspirated. an it is one of the reason why I adore most of Hole riffs, especially on Live Through This album... but never knew it before... discovering Sonic Youth after Hole music[/Hole spammer]
