Let me also say my opinion to this. I do also think so, that to be a "fan" you don't need to have all the cd's and to collect everything. I like many bands but I don't try to get everything they release. But I like to collect things and it's very nice to have a lot of cd's and different versions from a band you like. Sometimes it might get maybe too far and when there's nothing more to buy (you have all the albums and singles that are possible to find) you start to look for different
booklets for example
. To collect is nicer than to own a perfect collection. In this booklet-case I would just like to have the "nicer" booklet. If I find it, I can sell the other one, (even though I'm quite sure that I couldn't do that anyway). This materialism is a bit of an obsession, if you like to think so, but if you have money for it and it makes you happy, there's nothing wrong in it. It doesn't make you to a bigger or a better fan though.
