I have to say Souvenirs, its a good album and everything, but I don't find it quite as intriguing as the other ones. And I thought Nighttime Birds was probably the best with Anneke...or its at least right there with HTMAP. But yeah, I definately think that Souvenirs is the weakest with Anneke, even though it is still a very good album.

I can't believe Nighttime Birds has so many votes, easily my favorite. I guess its the metal in me. Hard to pick a least favorite, but I guess I'd have to go with if_then_else.

The Gathering sound didn't seem as well developed on this album. There were some strong songs, but I thought that the musical quality was uneven- Rene and Frank really hadn't started exploring different types of sounds, and Hans' drumming wasn't as pronounced. Anneke's vocals were certainly powerful, but they didn't seem to show as much range as on any of the later albums. Also, the music itself wasn't as emotional. Even by the next album you had tracks like Nightime Birds which was very complex, and Shrink, which was deeply emotional. I thought Kevin's Telescope was a great balance, and Inuit and 3rd Chance both really cooked. By HtMaP they had it together- and since then they have continued to innovate and impress me.

When I got Mandylion I thought it was OK, but wasn't particularly looking forward to a new album. I picked up NB a few months after it came out, and it really impressed me, so I was looking forward the next one. As soon as I saw HtMaP for sale I bought it, and then started collecting the backlog of EPs, and after HtMaP I started hanging out on the web looking for news of the next releases, and placed orders the day they came out.

Mandylion is the album which Anneke voice stands out much more. The power and softness mix each other extraordinarily, NtB has similar moments. Nevertheless with the new soft style and that troublesome zeal for the experimental things, the songs sound very simple and most times this amazing voice gets lost. There're still nice songs and it's a beautiful voice yet, but like many others, really many others...

About the on topic poll.... I haven't doubts... Souvenirs

Wow, that was a hard question, i really love all those albums. I just know that my favorite is HTMAP, but to pick the one that I like the least is really hard, because it will depend on the moment and what i feel, at the time. I voted for souvenirs but I’m not really sure about it.

Cheers

Yes, I have on each record "fav" songs, so it isn'T possible for me to vote to an album under this topic.

My favs are
Mandylion - Sand & Mercury
Nighttime Birds - Nighttime Birds, Kevin's Telescope
HTMAP - Travel
ITE - Amity, Saturnine
Souvenirs - Souvenirs, These Good People
