Love 'em all but after a couple of hours of thinking voted for souvenirs.

Souvenirs

Uninspiring and lacking key characteristics of their sound.

It will never be more evident to me the switched stylistic change of their sound as when I look at people's opinions of the best and worst TG album. The slagging-off of Mandylion and Nighttime Birds by some of the fans definitely shows how out of touch some of the fans are with their truly classic material.

If you don't like the older material, then that's fine. Everyone is entitled to their own perspective. After all, their new material should be categorized as a different name, so I can't blame people for not appreciating Man...& NB.

They are all great, natch. The least sophisticated and therefore least good album is Mandylion, and they kept growing and moving from there. That said, for me they peaked with If_Then_Else, but i remain as excited and interested in their next work as i always have been.

Prrrrrrffffffff....Nighttime birds...

Why? because...because...because. :-?

It's the less magical album...it's not a copy of Mandylion because its more variety and it's more melodic but...Mandylion is the most powerful, HTMAP? is...HTAMP? xD, ITE for me it's maybe their best album althoug is not impressive as HTMAP or Souvenirs; and Souvenirs is such a masterpiece, maybe not my style at all, but it's amazing how the band has reached this style =)

Then, Thinking about it, NB, I've to say that the only song I do not like of the band is from this CD: New moon, different day...

I also voted NB. At that time, the band wanted a more stable period after three completely different albums. This attitude produced a less experimental album.

But I really love On Most Surfaces :D

I dont like NB from the first day it was released...it is so typical heavy/doom that the first thought I have was that they were making their start for the next record without having CM annoying them...5 months afterwards these thoughts went out in the Eleanor's Faces newsletters and their best album started with CM spending a lot of money for HTMAP!

If you are able to find some TV interviews Hans had admitted this fact even 2 months after NB was released....

I am really glad for seeing NB as least favourite album...I still believe that Almost A Dance is MUCH more better album!I LOVE THEIR SOUND IN IT - FROST!

OYGK!

Gotta tell you this:

A year-or-two ago I would have answered Souvenirs and/or HTMAP to this poll. I would event have added something like "they probably are the two worst albums in the whole universe." But not anymore.

For about five years I thought HTMAP was the greatest disappointment from the band (I liked Mandylion and Nighttime Birds bery much and I considered HTMAP way too non-tg album at the time it was released, it wasn't any metal, it definetely wasn't TG - to me. And it was sooo proge-wannabe). When Souvenirs was released, I thought it just can't go any worse than this... I was really losing my faith in the band...

...BUT...

...then came Sleepy Buildings and changed everything - I never couldn't imagine a live album would sound this great. I realised that this is The Gathering at its best, this is the reason for its existence, this semi-acoustic thing. Only then I discovered those great songs like Travel and Red Is A Slow Colour (a friend of mine had hyped these songs for years, and I couldn't really understand what was so great about them - until Sleepy Buildings). I thought it would be great if they made more this "semi-acoustic-atmospheric-floating-kinda" music. I suddenly realized that that's exactly what they've been doing since HTMAP. For years I have had this treasure (HTMAP) in my CD collection, and I hadn't listened to it but only once or twice. What a fool had I been.

Soon after that I also started listening Souvenirs actively, just to see if I like it after all - and I did like it, very much indeed (I especially like You Learn About it, Anneke's voice sounds so warm and calm). The ending of the album isn't though quite my favorite.

Nowadays I like all TG's "Anneke era" albums very much, can't really tell which one would be THE best, though I do consider Mandylion as the best rock/metal album of the 90's.

A lot of ppl think "hey it's not metal this sucks..." That could be the main problem for bands by leaving that scene to find their right way that fans can't really accept such drastical changes like TG's was (and here let me mentioning my other favourite Anathema again, exactly the same...)

To tell a "metalhead" that "hey, we want to play this and not metal anymore" so that (s)he could find it immediately cool - well, kinda hard... I don't really think this scene would be the most tolerant to bands that want to change...

Btw I wfind myself lucky 'cause I got known this sweet Dutchies after i_t_e really (before that I had Mandylion but didn't really touch me I really don't know why :o ) so I knew what was before and what came after (definetively HTMAP wasn't a new shock for me, it was the second I heard as I remember) but I know that if I had have fell in love soon with the two first Annie-album, with that mentality and musical taste I had at the time when HTMAP came out I'd have done the same.

So I understand your story Huoneusto
