We were informed by the moderators that the old topics will be deleted,to reduce as much as possible the database.

My opinion(and most of the people i talked about it) think that this is not a solution. The problem is solely the crappy server company that sucks and which is probably cheap, and so we "have" to stick with it. By deleting there will be no difference with the problems. You can do what you want, but it's like giving analgesic pills for a patient of HIV. It's just irrelevant. Sorry.

An example of an other forum hosted at the same hosting company is http://phorum.surrealm.net . That forum has 8 times less posts than our TG-forum, but runs much faster.

There are many official forums of bands where messages are stored for only 1 year.

@Petros; you keep on moaning... but maybe you should think a little bit more before to get aggressive like that...
If I see how many post this forum has it's more than 300k... the other forums I browses have less than 100k...
that's already a point.
if the post that are dead since 3 years are delete from the database, it won't hurt anyone and it can only increase the speed of the forum...
My guess is that it should be a first and very good step..
Then, preventing bots to surf can be a second one...

On user sides, I think greek mods can delete quite a lot cause Greek forums are about 50% of the total posts :green:

Time for changes.... I find this new forum very pleasant. (lay out, colours, structures, .. blue colours reminds me a bit from the first TG forum)

just noticed some slow response from time to time when posting... but that's no that embarassing to me.
I guess more improvements are on the way...

anyway, thanx for the wonderful job since last week!

Don't want to be a complaining a**hole, but I still find the forum slow and keep getting this message lots of times:

"General Error
SQL ERROR [ mysql4 ]

Can't connect to MySQL server on 'mysqlbb.cyclingcolours.com' (4) [2003]

An sql error occurred while fetching this page. Please contact an administrator if this problem persists."

Both when I try to read a post and when to post.

And yes, I sure HAVE emptied my cache... :-?

Bring back "Jump to" on the bottom right of the page and the "return to [forum]" on the bottom left. Both were very useful.

Also "Search" and "Online users" should be brought back too.

I'm currently in discussion with the company (where I host website and forum) about the database connection problems. They say that the server is okay, but that there are lot's of database requests.

To reduce the number of database requests the most intentive items (search, and Google/Yahoo spiders) are disabled, as well as some other handy but additional features (who is online list, extra buttons). These items are temporairly (1-2 days) disabled, but will return as soon as possible. And nearly all spam registrations are now blocked.

Running a minimal forum (most features disabled) should reduce the server loads. And besides this it makes it easier to trace the IP's or forum functions who are (still) using too much and causing the forum to crash. If the forum still crashed it's not the size of database itself or number of visitors, but then it should be caused by a too crowded server (which they deny), a wrong configuration (of server or contact to server) or corupted data in database.

I don't see any improvements so far... Still slow as a snail being pushed back on a tarbarrel

I know a diffirent forum that is also made with the same software, with many more users and a lot more posts and I never have any troubles with that, always as quick as can be. And all the posts ever made are still in database (=7 years of posts or more).
So, from what I can tell as a no-no, the software or database is not the issue, which would leave the server or contact with the server, right?

I really hope this issue can be solved because I love this forum but I don't visit/post nearly as often as I used to, just to avoid the agony of getting error messages and waiting 20-30 seconds for a page load :-?

Why can't we edit properly our signatures?

i Hola !

pasta al dente ??? lekker !!!

Yeah, it's important to change the singnature and/or avatar for Fari ;)

But seriously, it's better to open a new window for links.
Perhaps this also reduce server-load by reloading the site.

I got 3 questions to the admin:

1) Should we assume that problem is considered solved? It's not like the shit a month ago,but it is still like how it was all year. And that's not the considered normal. Are there any actions to be taken from now on to solve,or as i said "case closed"?

2)When are we finally going to use the search system?

3)Whytf is a limit of 10 emos per post?

1) The speed and stability is now better than one month ago. But still not as good as I want it to be. I'm still busy with some improvements.

2) The search function will return when the performance issues are completely solved.

3) I think 10 smilies per post is more than enough to support the text of your message.
