In my top3 would be for sure:

Elend (for making really dark music in new ways without any compromises)
Depeche Mode (for so many good albums in nearly 30 years)

But I really can't decide which one should be the third. Maybe Dead Can Dance, or The Cure - or The Gathering!

1- Pearl Jam

some great music leave you forever... some don't and just turn around. and some music was leaving you a moment til you realize it's really your music of your life... and then, there's no turning back. it's part of you til your end.

2- The Gathering

everything til Home era. I wouldn't say The West Pole is not my cup of tea, but even as a good line up, it is no way what emotionally I lived before. I even prefer Always stuffs..

3- ?

Probably Sonic Youth.

I didn't listen to their whole discography but the least i did about them convinced me. And their new album is great. An old band but still on tracks... they still rock with all the best!

or Probably Iron Maiden.

Everything til Brave New World era.
I consider this one as my first favourite band in 87/88 even after Stryper, Heart and Guns N' Roses that i knew before. Being interested in horror and graphic style, I started collecting Riggs post cards and then put my ear on their music. I was discovered Somewhere in Time on a recorded tape by my sister girlfriend. i still have it. lol

It's really interesting that so many list Pearl Jam in their Top Three these days; not only do they go back to being formed in Seattle around 1990 or so, but their bass guitar player, Jeff Ament, grew up some twenty miles south of where I grew up in some place called Big Sandy, Montana. I've passed through it so many times I can't keep count but it's only a small farming/ranching community of less than a thousand people or so stuck out in the prairie somewheres. Still haven't gotten around to listening to anything by them yet. Strange.

Anyways, my Top Three as of the present:

- Draconian with Lisa Johansson (wish they'd come out with a DVD soon)
- Epica with Simone Simons
- Still strung out over Tristania with Vebeke Stene
- Nightwish with Tarja (nothing against Annette Olzon but...)
- After Forever with Floor Janzen
- ...In the Woods
- theGathering with Anneke (Silje sounds pretty good as well but I've only just become aware of theGathering in the last year or so so I'm in the catch up phase right about now).
- The Sins of Thy Beloved
- Trail of Tears with Helen Iren Michaelsen
- Sebnem Ferah out of Turkey & Amaral out of Spain

Let's see, you say Top Three, right?..got a couple more here somewhere. Used to get into Jefferson Airplane with Grace Slick ('Bathing at Baxter's' & 'Crown of Creation'), Quicksilver Messenger Service with their 'Happy Trails,' Grateful Dead with their 'Live/Dead.' The Moody Blues and Country Joe and the Fish 'Electric Music for Mind and Body,' Robin Trower and his 'Bridge of Sighs.' Pink Floyd was pretty avant garde for the times but it's hard for me to get into these days. Strange. Too many other things going on. Can't keep up with it all.

Oh, also Quicksilver Messenger Service and Peter Green's Fleedwood Mac. Jethro Tull and early Santana. Top Three?...after all this that's impossible to pick just three.

Okay, little update.

1. The cure
I've listened four of their albums now, and I have only heard one or two songs that I don't adore. The ambiance of their albums is just fabulous. The only album coming close to The Cure, talking about ambiance, is Tiamat's Wildhoney. Besides that, The Cure is mainstream, which means I can talk about it with many, many people and can turn it on without being cursed to the depths of hell! Halleluja! I don't like many bands who I can just turn on so that everybody likes it... :P

2. The Gathering
If there is one rock band that has explored every somewhat known corner of the genre, it is TG. From the harder metal (on e.g. Always) to one of the first groundbreaking female fronted metal albums (Mandylion) to just plain rock (HTMAP, if_then_else) to minimalistic, atmospheric rock (Souvenirs) to just atmospheric rock (Home, The west pole). I think you have had almost everything there. That means you can listen something, no matter what mood you're in. That's one of the great advantages of TG. Besides that, it's just very good music, and some of the songs are classics (Saturnine; the song with the best shifts in ambiance I've ever heard, Capital of nowhere; the first part is just reaaaally beautiful with Anne's voice, and the instrumental section can barely be beaten, and the second part is Pink Floyd, which is wooooonderful!)

3. Nightwish
In my opinion still the band that mixes classical elements and metal the best. With Anette I think they did that even better than with Tarja. With Tarja they had an exceptional vocalist, but it wasn't exceptional instrumentally. With Anette the instrumental section just couldn't be better (so I'm already pretty anxious for the new album), but the vocalist could be beaten. That does not say that Anette is bad, though. Anything but bad.

It could be that my next update features Pink Floyd. I just have to listen to that a bit more.

Well, okay. I can understand you name Paradise Lost (although I don't think they have done as many styles as TG) and Ulver (of which I don't know what style their last few albums can be put under... But that's also a good sign... :) )

But I don't know Emperor's former bassist. Is it something I should check out?

Sure, but One second,Host, and Believe in nothing are quite unique in Paradise Lost career because of the way it sounds, musically speaking.
I mean people were expecting their usual gothic style at this period :)

"But I don't know Emperor's former bassist. Is it something I should check out?"

Yes,Mortiis use to be part of a black metal band, then he made ambient music, well a style that he calls "dark dungeon music"

..and Ulver is one of the most fascinating bands I discovered this year.

Well, okay, I understand you. I don't know Paradise lost that well, I have just listened some of their albums, and that's where it ends, I'm not an obsessive listener of theirs... :P So I guess I don't have to pretend like I know a whole lot about them. ^_^"

And then I'll give Mortiis a listen as well. "Dark dungeon music", if it's really as spectacular as he describes it himself, I better prepare myself to be blown away... :P

And indeed, Ulver is! Listened to "Shadows of the Sun" yesterday, and it sounded quite like ambient!
I have tried to listen 'real' ambient before, but I couldn't bare it. Ulver, however, was easy to keep listening to for an entire album... Definitely one of the most interesting bands in a long, long time :)
