They have successfully moved away from death metal towards symphonic rock, gothic and psychedelics. The single Strange Machines enters the Top 40.
1996
The Gathering goes on an extensive tour of the Benelux, Germany and Switzerland and in the autumn they go into the studio to record a new album.
1997
The album Nighttime Birds comes out. The band plays the Pinkpop festival and the Roskilde festival in Denmark.

Without the band's permission Century Media releases the DVD In Motion. The new EP Black Light District marks a new musical direction for the band, which incorporates alternative rock influences.

After two years the Gathering has finished the new album Souvenirs, which is released on their own Psychonaut label, first in Europe on February 24 and then in the rest of the world on March 12. The 10-track album is produced by Zlaya Hadzich (Sonic Youth, Motorpsycho, Low and Agrésion). As of March the band tours through Germany, France, Spain, Portugal, Austria, Switzerland and the Czech Republic. In May they touch home base again. As of February 2004, around the release of the band's new semi acoustic live-album Sleepy Buildings, Kooijman will debut on stage. She is to replace Hugo Prinsen who quits the band for private reasons. Prinsen's farewell gig is in Tilburg's 013 on November 16.
